Blade Runner Soundtrack [Full Vinyl Rip 2013]

From one of the best sci-fi movies of all time, someone has recorded the greatest sci-fi soundtrack of all time straight from vinyl - Blade Runner. Still considered to be Vangelis' greatest work, this soundtrack is haunting, futuristic and dreamy. Even having not seen the final release (he died just before), Philip K. Dick was excited about his novel 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep' being made into a full length feature film.

He wrote:
“This is not escapism; it is super realism, so gritty and detailed and authentic and goddamn convincing that, well, after the segment I found my normal present-day “reality” pallid by comparison. What I am saying is that all of you collectively may have created a unique new form of graphic, artistic expression, never before seen. And, I think, BLADE RUNNER is going to revolutionize our conceptions of what science fiction is and, more, can be.”

OLD SCHOOL JUNGLE :: Lary Breaks - Succumb To Bliss (mix)

The 90's were my formative years in electronic music. I traveled to many parties in the mid-west and mid-south during that time and there were a few DJ's that really inspired me. Larry Cole a.k.a. DJ Lary Breaks was definitely the one DJ who created my love for Drum 'n Bass and Jungle. Lary played for BAM productions in Nashville and it was his performances and mixtapes that got me hooked. One mixtape in particular - Substrata, which is lost to the world ... I've even contacted him and he no longer has copies, was played so much in my car that I blew all my speakers and wore out the cassette.

Lary and others like him helped the scene to grow here and I will always be thankful.

HIPSTER-HOP // Captain Kangaroo Pimp, SonReal

Hipster-Hop, yes it's a real genre, is the combination of hip hop with hipster style and sensibilities ... pioneered by artists like Beck, Cool Kids, Childish Gambino and Macklemore. The two artists we feature here use comedy as an important prop in both the lyrics and videos. It's hard to say, if anyone takes this music seriously, but as an observer, it's sure fun to watch.

BT - 13 Angels On My Broken Windowsill

BT a.k.a. Brian Transeau has created 13+ minute epic track with 13 Angels On My Broken Windowsill. This one starts off very softly and ambient, then drops into a glitchy, dubstep sort of realm. The accompanying video is a sight to behold - simply gorgeous.

Brian started his career in the early 90's collaborating with Deep Dish. He soon became a pioneering artist in the trance genre movement and does not consider himself to be a DJ, rather a classical artist. In June of 2012, he released If the Stars are Eternal So are You and I which is one of the first albums where he incorporates ambient, glitchy and more minimal sounds. It's from this album, that we have 13 Angels On My Broken Windowsill.

MiniCoolBoyz - In Your Face

I'll admit, a lot of techno music just bores me. So, I'm pretty excited when I hear some good stuff that gets my juices flowing. Enter MiniCoolBoyz, the Milano DJ / Producer duo with their track In Your Face - this one is a pumping, driving, whirligig (is that a word?) of a tune that would surely get me on the dancefloor.

Daft Punk have finally dropped the official video to Lose Yourself to Dance ... one of the best tunes on Random Access Memories. Unfortunately, the video is lackluster, unlike Daft Punk's earlier videos - known for being strange, innovative or imaginative.

SENTENCED TO LIFE :: MF Grimm - Life and Death

Sometimes a song or an album has a great story behind it. In this case, it's the story MF Grimm or MF Grimm Reaper a.k.a. Percy Carey. He grew up on Manhatten's Upper West Side, the neighbor to Morgan Freeman who arranged to have him cast as a child actor on Sesame Street, which he did for four years.

In the early nineties, he formed a DJ/rapper group called The Gravediggaz (not to be confused with the Gravediggaz) and through the mid-nineties worked together with Roc Raida. In 1993, Grimm placed at the World Supremacy Battle, already known as an experienced battle rapper. That year, he released his first 12" single, So Whatcha Want Nigga? and performed at the Jack The Rapper convention on Execution Night, sharing the stage with Lady of Rage, Tupac, and Dogg Pound, in Atlanta. He also collaborated with hip-hop legends like Kool G Rap and KMD.

In 1994, Grimm survived an attempted murder where he was shot seven times by rival drug dealers, and three times in an earlier murder attempt in 1986. As a result of the 1994 attack, he was deafened, blinded, paralyzed from the waist down, and comatose; Doctors predicted that he would suffer nulled senses and be paralyzed for the rest of his life. Grimm recovered full vision, hearing, and speech ability, but still uses a wheelchair.

Grimm went on to release several 12" singles on the Fondle 'Em label and started collaborating extensively with label mate MF DOOM whose debut album Operation Doomsday Grimm served as an executive producer on. The pair also released a collaborative EP on Brick Records entitled MF EP. Grimm founded label Day By Day Entertainment in the late-1990s. At around the same time, he put together his Godzilla-inspired MC collective, the Monsta Island Czars, which at the time also featured MF DOOM.

Facing narcotics and conspiracy charges, Grimm was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2000. He paid a one-day bail of $100,000 recording The Downfall of Ibliys: A Ghetto Opera, which features Life and Death, in those twenty-four hours. During his stay in jail, Grimm studied law. After filing many appeals, he was able to reduce his sentence to three years and he was released in 2003.

You can certainly hear it in the lyrics of Life and Death ... the uncertainty he was facing, a man sentenced and yet a plan of escape.

VICE travels to South Korea to understand the traditional eastern medicine of poo wine. What is seemingly disgusting to most is supposedly used to treat several different ailments. Is it really that bad after all, when we have to be reminded that all alcohol is made from feces so to speak as ethanol or ethyl alcohol is the waste of yeast mixing with sugars in the fermentation process?

TERRY CREWS IS :: Major Lazer - Scare Me feat. Peaches & Timberlee

OK, now I have seen it all! In this latest Major Lazer video, where the Major is played by none other than Terry Crews, he is summoned by the Cinco Commander and teamed with Knife Fight to scour the city for General Rubbish. What follows is total, over-the-top cornball action sequences. It is entertaining, I'll give it that much, but can it really redeem this song?

Major Lazer has seemingly gone downhill after Diplo partner Switch left the group citing creative differences. Also, in case you missed it, once frontman Skerrit Bwoy has also left the group and "daggering" when he found God.

I had such high hopes for the group after the release of their track Get Free. Still, I have to say Terry Crews is the perfect Major Lazer.

Surkin Boiler Room Paris DJ Set

French phenomena Surkin will eternally look like he's 16, but his style and technical skills tell a different story. Benoit Heitz, who is actually 28 launched the record label Marble along with Para One and Bobmo in 2011. He's also been releasing fast moving, hi-energy tracks that have gained the attention of M.I.A., Chromeo, Justice, Kavinsky and more.

In this special Boiler Room set, Surkin plays all the classics. He is known for setting the room on fire wherever he plays. Indeed, one of my best club memories was in Chicago at a Surkin and Para One show.

Another email submission in my inbox today ... this time "It's Dan!". Dan Farber, that is. This 26 year old DJ/Producer from Tel Aviv, Israel, started nearly 10 years ago as the in-house producer and artist for Israel's biggest rap collective TACT. After a messy break up, he went out on his own and has since then produced some of Israel's biggest hits. Rattlesnake is a hype heavy banger of a track that will make you climax at least a few times before it's over.

DJ Cheb I Sabbah - Ganga Dev

Cheb I Sabbah which translates to "Young of the Morning" is a DJ and World Music Composer who was born in Algeria to a musical family. After moving to Paris in the 1960's, he became a club DJ playing soul records and eventually became known for his work deejaying and composing "World Music". In 2011, Cheb I Sabbah was diagnosed with stomach cancer and given less than 4 weeks to live. He has surpassed all expectations, with help in part due to fans and funding of his medical treatments through his label - Six Degree Records. He just turned 66 in August and resides in San Francisco.

SHOEGAZING :: NOTHING - Dig

Shoegaze is a genre made popular in the mid 90's with bands like My Bloody Valentine, Ride, and Lush. I haven't heard anything so fitting of the title until tonite with Nothing's track Dig. If ever there was a resurgence of the genre, it's here. Where do they hail from? Philadelphia, no less. Will shoegaze become the new dubstep ... who knows, but with this band, we aren't complaining.

Burex ft Amy Capilari - Mister Moon & Miss Sun

Burex is a new name in the house music scene; but a quick couple hours on his Soundcloud page leaves no doubt that he's been doing work, and its damn good.  His forthcoming release on London/Rome based Sentio Music Group is no exception.  The 'Sun EP' is five really great tracks but the crown jewel is one I've been playing for a few weeks now and I cant get enough of it.  Mister Moon & Miss Sun has some truly excellent piano work and Amy Capilari's vocals are nothing short of beautiful.  The 'Sun EP' is slated for release August 24th so mark your calendars.

Seven Handle Circus - Such Great Heights (Postal Service Cover)

Georgia band Seven Handle Circus are incredible at their bluegrass covers of pop songs. We covered their version of Daft Punk's One More Time and now they've contributed to a whole Postal Service album of folk covers called Independent Clauses with Such Great Heights. This one, in my opinion, is better than the original.

In my spare time, I watch a lot of movies. Actually, I've been able to learn and appreciate some of my favorite music artists through some of the movies that I've seen. Often, the music with the right context or the right scene is all it takes. For example, in Quadrophenia when the main character is driving on the cliffs with The Who playing in the background - it's very powerful!
