AND YOU DON'T STOP :: Moby - Go

One of my earliest memories in terms of rave music might just be this song. I had purchased one of those compilations in the early 90's when I was living in Germany and Moby - Go was the track that I continually went back and listened to again and again. I later discovered that Moby had sampled Laura Palmer's Theme from the show Twin Peaks for the emotional melody.

The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots (Full Album - Vinyl Rip)

One of the few things my ex-wife left me with was this album. It sat in a box for a few years until one day I pulled it out curious to see if she had any real taste in music. My my my ... how I was surprised. I knew that The Flaming Lips were good, but I didn't imagine that this album would be on heavy rotation on my CD player. In The Morning of the Magicians has got to be one of my favorite Flaming Lips songs of all time.

The award winning album was eventually made into a Broadway play directed by Des McAnuff in 2007. Frontman Wayne Coyne said of the plot -

"There's the real world and then there's this fantastical world. This girl, the Yoshimi character, is dying of cancer. And these two guys are battling to come visit her in the hospital. And as one of the boyfriends envisions trying to save the girl, he enters this other dimension where Yoshimi is this Japanese warrior and the pink robots are an incarnation of her disease. It's almost like the disease has to win in order for her soul to survive. Or something like that."

WHAT COMES AROUND :: Vitalic - Fade Away (Official Video)

... GOES AROUND. Everyone wants the suitcase, so much so that they will kill and eventually die for it (over and over). Vitalic has cleverly used the power of video to pass the suitcase on to you. Do you accept?

Teen Daze - New Life (Buzzsession)

The great folks at thewildhoneypie.com have captured a session with Canadian Teen Daze. The session took place in Brooklyn's Degraw Sound recording studio. Teen Daze uses the power of Ableton Live to play a track from his 2012 release "The Inner Mansions", appropriately called New Life.

WORD IS BOND :: Raekwon - Glaciers Of Ice

In 1995 Wu-Tang ruled all the kingdoms. Master Raekwon wrecked his own kung-fu style with Only Built 4 Cuban Linx. Along his odyssey he traveled with Master Tony Starks aka Ghost Face Killer. Their special sonic weaponry is evident on Glaciers Of Ice. For they would defend their honor to any of the formidable foes who crossed their path. It was the spirit of RZA who followed them and protected them with the bond that is Wu-Tang chi.

I don't get as much time to blog these days, so when I do, you know it's going to be a special tune. Cashmere Cat's remix of Miguel - Do You is one of those tracks that transcends categories. To use a metaphor, it's a ballerina dancing through a fireworks stand while simultaneous explosions are going off around her. You may not like drugs, but you're gonna love this song.

Balmorhea - Pyrakantha

Like some kind of Tolkien epic, Pyrakantha kind of charges along a journey discovering many different moods and having adventures along the way. It almost sounds, dare I say it, improvisational.

POSTED FROM A DREAM :: Dense & Pika - Morse Mode

I just woke up from a dream where I was deejaying a Dense song from some kind of music book. We were hanging out at some urban hipster house where they pee'd through a hole in the floor. The artist's name was definitely "Dense" (I remember looking through this book until I picked one). The song actually stopped midway (technical difficulty) as that is what happened when you closed this particular book. I woke up right after.

World Party - Goodbye Jumbo (Full Album - playlist)

World Party
Karl Wallinger's band - World Party might be one of the greatest bands that you've never heard of from the 80's and 90's. Wallinger got his start as the musical director of London's West End version on The Rocky Horror Picture Show, before joining a funk band dubbed The Out and then The Waterboys.

Recorded at Wallinger's home in 1986, his debut album Private Revolution yielded two minor hits in the UK, "Private Revolution" and "Ship of Fools". "Ship Of Fools", however, did much better outside the UK — it reached no. 4 in Australia, no. 21 in New Zealand, and no. 27 in the US, in the process becoming the act's only major international hit.

Between World Party's first and second albums, Wallinger aided SinƩad O'Connor in recording her 1988 debut, The Lion and the Cobra. O'Connor, then an unknown, had appeared as a guest on World Party's first album. She would go on to appear as a guest on the second LP as well.

Goodbye Jumbo, World Party's second album, contained the minor UK hit singles "Way Down Now" and "Put the Message in the Box". Wallinger collaborated with fellow songwriter Guy Chambers on some of the tracks. Goodbye Jumbo was voted "album of the year" by Q magazine and was nominated for a Grammy Award for "best alternative music performance" in the US.

These guys are an incredible live show too. I have the chance to see them at the Rock Am Ring Festival in 1993 in Nurburgring Germany along with Faith No More, INXS, Leonard Cohen, Danzig, The Black Crowes and a ton of other acts.

CUT CHEMIST CHANGED MY LIFE :: Cut Chemist - Sound Of The Police

Cut Chemist changed my life! He really did. In 2006, I've was travelling quite a bit and happened out to L.A. or rather Palmdale for work. I finished a bit early and was spending my last night in L.A. before flying back to Chicago. I was eating dinner at a sushi joint on Venice Beach and asked the server which club I should check out on a Thursday night. She told me Zanzibar in Santa Monica had good DJ's so I headed back to the hotel to get ready, mapped it out and headed to Santa Monica.

I get there around 8 and the crowd was quite thin so I took the opportunity to introduce myself and meet some new people. I met Rocky Dawani who was sponsoring the night along with Jeremy Sole who together put on this regular night called Afro Funke. I was informed that Cut Chemist would be deejaying that night. Now, I'd never seen Cut Chemist aka Lucas MacFadden live ... but he was one of my favorite turntablists and is truly a connoisseur of rare grooves and hard to find vinyl. He has also just released The Audience's Listening his first full length solo album.

Now Cut Chemist followed Jeremy Sole in the lineup and was imbibing pretty heavily on a nice size bottle of red wine. Despite the fact that he was a bit tipsy ... his set was superb. He started of playing tunes like Afrodisiac SoundSystem's - C.K. Mann vs. Sugarhill Gang

... then moved onto some really rare Ghana 45's ... one of which despite having a generic Philips 45 label on it
the vocals on the track were angelic and incredible. I have been trying to ID this track ever since and even recently sent a message describing it to Cut in hopes that he might share this tune. He finally ended the night with one of his best tracks - The Garden

I ended the night hanging backstage with everyone and Rocky Dawani even gave me his LP which I still have to this day. When I did finally leave Zanzibar, I wasn't ready to turn in just yet. Feeling so good and knowing no one in L.A. still up that late. I ended up talking to a homeless guy at 7-11 and took him out for pancakes.

Although that night will be forever etched into my mind, I really wish someone had recorded that set. The closest I've heard to that experience has to be "Sound of the Police", a four track set released by Cut in 2010 on which he flirts with Nigerian Afrobeat, Cuban percussion, Brazilian TropicƔlia, and that deathless old-school b-boy break, the Incredible Bongo Band's "Apache".

Johnny Jewel - BLACK & WHITE / A MIX FOR AUTUMN

Johnny Jewel
BLACK & WHITE / A MIX FOR AUTUMN

It's been a crazy couple of weeks...After Paris & Amsterdam...Chromatics flew from London to Australia for two weeks of festivals...Then Natty & I hopped on a plane from Brisbane...to Singapore...to Abu Dhabi...landing in Berlin 30 hours later in time to have breakfast with Ida...Symmetry played our first show that night opening up for Glass Candy in Berlin at Karl Lagerfeld's book release party...Patron with Oko...then Night Flight to Quebec...Brazil in the morning...Glass Candy throws a party in Sao Paulo for Bazaar's birthday. After looping the globe twice...We're finally back in Montreal for one of my favorite times of year. It's the end of Autumn, & all of the Reds, Greens, & Yellows have disintegrated into Black & White. Everything is buried by the snow...Perfect weather for locking yourself in the studio with a synthesizer & your favorite records...I put together a collage of songs that, for one reason or another...always remind me of Autumn.

RUFFFFF :: Hardwell - Spaceman (Carnage Festival Trap Remix)

Carnage has amped up the energy on Hardwell's Spaceman, if that was even possible. Now instead of just your next door neighbor complaining about the noise, it will be the houses down the block too.

WARHOLICISM :: Nico - These Days

Nico (born Christa PƤffgen; 16 October 1938 – 18 July 1988) was a German singer-songwriter, lyricist, composer, musician, fashion model, and actress, who initially rose to fame as a Warhol Superstar in the 1960s. She is known for both her vocal collaboration on The Velvet Underground's debut album, The Velvet Underground & Nico (1967), and her work as a solo artist from the late 1960s through the early 1980s. She also had roles in several films, including a cameo in Federico Fellini's La Dolce Vita (1960) and Andy Warhol's Chelsea Girls (1966), as herself.

These Days is from the 1996 album - Chelsea Girl, which is a reference to the film. It might be her most enduring song.

Chelsea Girl is a traditional chamber-folk album, which influenced artists such as Leonard Cohen, with strings and flute arrangements by producer Tom Wilson. Nico was not satisfied with the album and had little say in production matters. In retrospect, she said in 1981:

"I still cannot listen to it, because everything I wanted for that record, they took it away. I asked for drums, they said no. I asked for more guitars, they said no. And I asked for simplicity, and they covered it in flutes! [...] They added strings, and— I didn't like them, but I could live with them. But the flute! The first time I heard the album, I cried and it was all because of the flute."

DEM A CALL US PIRATES :: Cocoa Tea, Home T & Shabba Ranks - Pirates Anthem

Throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s, these three artists ruled the dancehall with hits like "Hold On" and "Stop Spreading Rumors." Shabba by himself was no joke, but was even more massive while collaborating with Home T and Cocoa Tea. The man responsible for putting it all together was producer Augustus "Gussie" Clarke, who lived behind the boards and behind such bass-swelling melodic classic productions as the "Telephone Love" riddim.

On "Pirates' Anthem," the three rocked together on this 1989 smash that ripped up airwaves, especially in the UK where the concept was inspired. Over the "Telephone Love" riddim, Home T's going solo on his "Single Life" boasting his famous "free and single, she love to mingle" chorus hook, still an echo in the dancehalls today.

But the real strength of this era and of Gussie Clarke's talent was that he launched Shabba Ranks into the world! On his "A nuh me she so," it's obvious why this master deejay is still considered by many to be the modern day father of the dancehall deejay. Cocoa Tea on the solo tip, through his "First Date" and "Why Turn Down the Sound," wasn't far behind either, especially if you were a fan of the singing smoothness that captivated the dancehall-reggae world. This music is indeed a reminder of a classic dancehall period.

F'IN CREDIBLE :: Gilt Trip - Get Em High (PRANAS RMX)

Prana was first expounded in the Upanishads, where it is part of the worldly, physical realm, sustaining the body and the mother of thought and thus also of the mind. Prana suffuses all living forms but is not itself the Atman or individual soul. In the Ayurveda, the Sun and sunshine are held to be a source of prana.

ą¤Ŗ्ą¤°ाą¤£ PRANAS ą¤Ŗ्ą¤°ाą¤£ aka Erik Voit is a Chicago producer and DJ with a gift of making mad footwork tunes and remixes. I first discovered the guy when I came across his Futurewerk Vol 1 mix and had the opportunity to play out with him at a few parties. Erik has got a lot of talent. I think this remix might be one of the best tracks I've heard in a while.

Public Enemy - Terminator X To The Edge Of Panic

In 1982, one of the greatest MC / Frontman combinations were born when Chuck D and Flavor Flav came together as Spectrum City. They released the record "Check Out the Radio", backed by "Lies", a social commentary. Chuck D put out a tape to promote WBAU (the radio station where he was working at the time) and to fend off a local MC who wanted to battle him. He called the tape Public Enemy #1 because he felt like he was being persecuted by people in the local scene. This was the first reference to the notion of a public enemy in any of Chuck D's songs.

Spectrum City DJ's went on to become Public Enemy and the rest is history.

LOCAL FLAVOR :: Estrella Negra - Estrella Negra E.P.

One of my favorite places to eat in Chicago is a cozy little place in Logan Square called Estrella Negra. I was told about it by my good friend Sheyla, who was working there. Go in for brunch sometime and try the Goat Cheese Chilaquile - you'll be floored. The owner, Oto Michel is a super cool guy with a lot going on, including a band which is called ... of course - Estrella Negra. Give 'em and listen and if you have a chance, go see them live.

Here's their bio -
Estrella Negra is not a band... More like a deal two friends made to make music that no one has ever heard before. The result is a bilingual combination of modern Electronica and Latin rock that will set you on fire. With never a dull moment, Estrella Negra spends countless hours in their Chicago-based studio creating sounds and writing songs. In under six months they released the "Estrella Negra" e.p and are currently working on finishing up their first full length album. Estrella Negra has gained cross-cultural recognition for their live performances and unique style. Estrella Negra is equal parts front man Otoniel Michel jr, and producer/ musician Phil Beskid. Their unique mixture of electronics, guitar and vocals can be described in a single word, Badass!

There is no doubt that The Flaming Lips and their front man Wayne Coyne hold some strange opinions on things. It's what keeps the group interesting. They have teamed with Bon Iver to release Ashes In The Air, from their forthcoming album, The Terror. The video is open to interpretation, but it could be called controversial in many circles. The Terror will also get a complete remix from the king of the abnormal himself - Dan Deacon. Look for the album to hit shelves on April 16.
