REBORN :: The Suns / When We Were Us EP

So, I was sent a message from a random person tonight on Facebook. They asked me to vote for a band The Suns on a Chicago magazine poll for The Deli for next months featured artists. Normally, I would ignore this kind of random message. This time, I actually clinked the link and checked out all the bands and I definitely voted for these guys. They deserve all the praise they can get. My favorite from the tracks available on their bandcamp page was Strangeland. I don't know if anthem is the appropriate term to use, but this song really hits you in the gut, then it breaks down and returns to hit you in the heart ... the refrain - "in my heart, you will be forever mine could describe how this song makes me feel about music, when I hear a song as good as this ... the reason I write about and share music. I only wish I still lived in Chicago, so I could go see them live. Maybe, they will swing my way.

Pete Wingfield - 18 With A Bullet {Original 1975 HQ Audio}

English keyboardist Pete Wingfield has done session work with numerous rock, blues, and R&B acts, among them Freddie King, Jimmy Witherspoon, the Hollies, and Van Morrison, as well as being a member of the Olympic Runners. A fixture within the music industry -- especially in England -- from the early to mid-'70s, his fame before the public has derived from his fine single "Eighteen with a Bullet" for Island in 1975. While it only reached number 15 on both the pop and R&B charts the week of November 11, 1975, "Eighteen with a Bullet" was actually number 18 with a bullet on the pop chart. It was also a charming, expertly bit sung of falsetto soul.

This one really gets me hyped! Chris Lake has always been a favorite of mine since he brought one of the greatest progressive tunes ever - Violins a few year back. This time, he pairs with Michaels Woods to bring what might be the floor filler of 2013. Starting with a progressive house melody of synths and piano ... the drop then brings us to electro and bass. This might sound like two songs, but it actually works.

Music changes so fast these days, who can keep up? Well, we sure have a good time trying. Like a new dish you've never tried ... it's great when a new tune like Killing Switch comes along. There's no fancy gimmick here. No wub wub, moombah or trap. Just plain good sounds. Last Lynx released the debut EP - ALASKA last December to little fanfare, which is just a shame, because it's damn good. You'll find all the tracks below, plus a bonus Killing Switch remix.

CLASSIC SOUL :: The Temptations - Just My Imagination

In the early 1960's, popular music was expanding as Rock took hold of the mainstream... so did R&B and Soul. One of the biggest acts of those genres and maybe the biggest act on the Detroit based label - Motown was The Temptations. They created the Motown sound which was not only R&B and Soul, but also came to be Cinemtatic and Psychedelic Soul, Funk, Disco and Adult Contemporary. The Temptations preached that Papa Was A Rolling Stone, I'm doing fine on Cloud Nine ... and that true love was possible even if just during the course of a song with My Girl and Just My Imagination. The Temptations were a team effort with most songs being sung co-lead while the rest of the act brought us that beautiful harmony we all know and love.

There is also much debate on whether or not his attention is worth our time, as critique by many big name Hip-Hop world. However James has recently signed a major deal with Def Jam for $2M so his efforts have gotten him someones attention.

Way back in 2011, my life was going to shit. I had left my girlfriend of 10 years, went thru a rehab treatment for drugs and alcohol and was living in a halfway house. For those who don't know ... the rules of the house are to stay sober, attend an AA meeting once a day and we also had a 10 PM curfew. Around the the 3rd week of my stay, I saw that Jonsi was playing nearby. I was always a big fan of Sigur Ros and I was determined to see Jonsi with someone special. I bought two tickets and really had no idea who to invite. I met my friend Wendy at a birthday party. We had a really good discussion about libertariansim, we remained friends online and when the time came I had invited her to go with me (as just friends). What happened next was just incredible, now Wendy had never heard Jonsi or Sigur Ros ... which was perfect.

As we sat in the upper bleacher seats of the Vic theatre, I could have never anticipated what would happen next. The show was incredible. We both wept and laughed and then cried again. The music and the images were so emotional that we hugged and cried and hugged some more. In the end, we heard that Jonsi was inviting some of the audience back stage, so I tried to bribe my way back, but alas my curfew was coming up, so I bought Jonsi's album on vinyl, said hello and goodbye to some familiar faces and left. I called the house to see if I could get a little more time and to my surprise, they said OK. As Wendy and I sat in a diner drinking coffee, one thing was clear ... this night had changed our lives. I miss you Wendy! I hope you are well.

REMINISCENT :: Porter Robinson - Language

One of the biggest underground hits of 2012 ... Porter Robinson brings us Language. This song is part trancer, part electro, all HEART! Chapel Hill, NC native Porter Robinson was influenced by Dance Dance Revolution and other video games. In 2011, he aligned with Srillex's OSWLA and released an EP titled Spitfire. Spitfire reached the number one spot on the iTunes Dance chart as well as the number one spot on Beatport's overall release chart. As a DJ, he has toured internationally and performed alongside artists including Deadmau5, Tiesto, Skrillex, and many more.

Tranquility Bass - They Came In Peace

One of the original innovators in the ambient/trip-hop movement, Tranquility Bass aka Mike Kandel submerged for most of the '90s before finally issuing his debut album in 1997. Kandel grew up in Chicago but moved to Los Angeles in the early '90s; inspired by his hometown's acid-house ideals, he formed the Exist Dance label in 1991 with Tom Chasteen and began producing classic ambient-house singles like "They Came in Peace" (available on Mo'Wax's original Headz compilation) and "Mya Yadana" (from the influential first volume of the Excursions in Ambience series). After Chasteen left Exist Dance in 1993, Kandel released a label compilation named Transmitting from Heaven but then disappeared to a remote island off the British Columbian coast to begin work on his debut album. Two years later, after trip-hop's influence had spread far and wide, he emerged from seclusion with Let the Freak Flag Fly, an album that reconciled his electronic fantasies with elements of psychedelia, funk and blues.

Who is Hudson Mohawke? He is half of TNGHT with Lunice being his partner. He is 26 years young from Glasgow, Scotland. He was the youngest ever UK DMC Champion at the age of 15. He runs with the Luckyme collective. He is signed to Warp Records. Alongside friend and affiliate Rustie, Hudson Mo is a purveyor of the hip-hop/electronic offshoot that is sometimes known as aqua-crunk or wonky, although Hudson does not accept these labels. He's produced one album Butter and 8 EP's. He is a badass. He likes Cypress Hill.

RAVEY X-MAS :: T Tauri - Joy To The World (No Felt Mix)

My good friend and roommate picked this record up back in the day at the now defunct Tower Records. I would get high as fuck and listen to this track in its many remixed formats over and over. This one came out in 1996 on the Hardkiss label and I suspect that T Tauri is one of the many pseudonyms for Gavin Hardkiss. The Hardkiss label was the shit back then releasing such treasures as God Within and Rabbit in the Moon.

Common aka Lonnie Lynn has been in the game for quite a while now ... and his done it all from music, to acting, modeling and putting out a clothing line. He's been invited to speak at the White House, amongst some controversy, and he's been involved in a feud with West Cost rap group Westside Connection on some lyrics in "I Used to Love H.E.R.". Rumor has it that he's dropping a new album in 2013.

Despite everything that he's done, I still think his second album Resurrection is his greatest work. Enjoy this track from that album - Communism which is still as fresh as the day it was made.

Skream aka Oliver Jones is one of dubstep most premier producers. As a teenager, he worked at London's Big Apple Records. He soon had DJ's playing his dubplates created using Fruityloops. He rose to prominence in 2006, when his album Skream! was released. He's done remixes for DJ Zinc, Dave Gahan, The Klaxons, La Roux, and Deadmau5. We get to hear him in this mix, playing out of his normal element, which is almost always a treat.

Earlier this week A$AP front-runner Rocky's album leaked onto the internet..roughly a month early. If you're familiar with A$AP and his sound then you know this album is highly anticipated, especially after his successes with Live.Love.A$AP (Download).

Angels & Airwaves - LOVE parts 1 and 2 (FULL ALBUM)

Angels & Airwaves have a new movie out called Love. It's an incredible storyline consisting of several separate characters. The main guy is trapped on a space station after the destruction of the earth. So throughout his years of being stuck up there, he sees the Earth starting to collapse below. He ends up basically becoming the last person alive. And then decades later, he wakes up one day and there's something outside of his spaceship, in low Earth orbit with him.

The movie is enhanced by the soundtrack which is completely produced by Angels & Airwaves and was released 2 years prior in 2009. Check out both soundtracks (the second is an instrumental) below:

Belgium based Villa, have been my favorite remixers of disco since dropping the remake Anita back a few years ago. This one is equally epic in scope. Hot Chip has been making some Hot Shit since they formed in London in 2000. And I Was a Boy from School or Boy From School as it was later shortened to, appeared on their second album - The Warning and has been covered by Portastic, Maritime and Grizzly Bear.

The song is a real gem from their catalog. It has a smoothed out electro disco feel and it's perfect for driving fast. It was listed at #29 on Pitchfork Media's top 500 songs of the 2000s.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT :: Teen Daze (download)

Ah Canada ... land of buds and maple syrup. "The Great White North" has produced a ton of incredible artists from Chromeo to Jokers of the Scene, A Tribe Called Red, A-Trak, Caribou, Datsik, Crystal Castles and Kid Koala. Recently, Teen Daze from British Columbia popped up on my radar. Teen Daze has been producing tracks and remixes since 2010, with a optimistic and futuristic feeling.

I've decided to share a few of my favorites below. The first, a remix of Giraffage & XXYYXX's trap heavy Even Though is definitely my jam. Teen Daze takes the original to another level by bringing up the synths and then breaking down to a 4x4 beat. You'll find a download link underneath the video. The Future is a mood enhancing trancer with luscious vocals. What You Feel is a pie in the sky disco track, while the last track is a gorgeous remix of Tycho's called Hours. Back in the early 90's, after I had graduated high school ... I came across this album in a used music store. The sound that would eventually be termed shoegaze was nowhere more polished than on this album. I would play this on repeat and listen to it in the morning, during the day and at night while going to sleep. These sounds got me through some very tough times being in another country at the time ... away from everyone that I cared about. Just listen to "Polar Bear" and tell me that you don't get shivers.

This was Ride's debult album released in 1990, then reissued in 2001, 2010 and 2011. Nowhere was named one of the best albums of the shoegaze genre and was listed in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die

Ride ceased to be a band in 1996.

It's no secret that I'm a big fan of TNGHT ... they are truly redefining hip hop and electronic music for the next generation. It seems they are catching the attention of a ton of folks out there.
