Ahoy Ahoy

So, blathering about music with Mr. Boats the other night at the aforementioned Hive party, Noble invited me to contribute here. As a wayward DJ who has gotten back on (off?) the wagon in the past year, I'm well chuffed about a lot of new, new to me, and newly rediscovered tracks. As far as EDM stuff that I would likely mix goes, I'm a house head who likes it from disco to deep to jack to tech (although not exactly "tech house" but more what I like to call "deep n weird"). But I like to hear stuff from all over the map. Might have a small dubstep prejudice, but I can dig it on occasion.

This here is some new (nu?) disco. I think I heard it on KCRW, which is fabulous eclectic streaming radio out of LA. NPR actually, but they've got an all music stream if you don't wanna hear the news too. Anyway, what gets me about this track is that it's a really solid groove, but then they come in with this acid twerk at about the 2:00 mark that just makes me do a duck face. Acid disco. Is that a genre? I love it.

PS the name's Andy, but you can call me Captain. Or Abe. Or whatever. Long as you call me.

Dolla Dolla bill ya'll!!!!!

Via my sister and Pretty lights .... love you sis!

I love Chicago summertime parties!!!!!!

So last night I played a gig at my friend's artist collective grand opening ~ The Hive - 1902 N Milwaukee ... and like all good parties, this one got a little chaotic. If this party is any indication of what the Hive will be then they are on the right track. I played an early, short set, not my best but later I was trying to play some disco for my boy Andy. Here you go brother, my favorite nu-disco song in the world ... Villa - Anita

THE HIVE IS BORN: CELEBRATE YOUR REBIRTH
The artist exhaustingly exploits an elemental force that birthed into their existence. This force grows to be almost uncontainable so proceeds to contextualize from thought to form. This cyclic demeanor of creation renders a tragic beauty in which we would like to celebrate.

BIRTH FEST explores the process of birth as a metaphor for creation beyond just the individual artist and furthermore into social context from which art strives. As a community space we hope to become fertilized with the brilliance of your mind. This show is NOT purely about showing art, its about creating a context for artists to merge.

Detroit Hip-Hop

While most are familiar with Detroit artists like Eminem and D12. The underground scene in Detroit has been alive and well for years. Groups such as Slum Village and artists who battled their way to the top like Ro Spit, Danny Brown and Elzhi; have kept the scene vibrant. Let's not forget one of the greatest hip-hop producers ever Jay Dilla (R.I.P.) According to his obituary at NPR.org, he "was one of the music industry's most influential hip-hop artists, working for big-name acts like A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Busta Rhymes and Common."

My favorite Detroit, via Ann Arbor, hip-hop DJ is DJ Graffiti. His sweet souled out mixes are bliss to my ears. Check out tunes from Ro Spit, Elzhi and Danny Brown, Jay Dilla and a DJ Graffiti mix after the jump.

A Tribe Called Quest Saved My Life

Last night I saw the new movie Beats, Rhymes and Life: The Travels of a Tribe Called Quest and I was most pleased. I've been a big fan of Tribe, ever since they saved my life. Let me explain. On November 9, 1993 I was a soldier serving in the army in Germany. On this particular date, we were out in Grafenwoehr, Germany doing training. Right before I left to camp in the woods for a few weeks, I picked up Midnight Marauders. From the beginning with the tour guide announcing "Hello, this is your Midnight Marauder program. I am on the front of your cover. I will be enhancing your cassette and CD with certain facts that you may find beneficial The average bounce meter for your Midnight Marauder program will be In the area of 95 bpm We hope that you will find our presentation precise, bass-heavy, and just right."

The training was cold, wet, muddy and just plain miserable but I kept that CD on repeat knowing that half way around the world, things were not only "just right", but that people were rejoicing this CD. I know I was. So, yeah this was my introduction to A Tribe Called Quest and it literally kept me sane.

Go see the movie, you won't regret it ... even if you are not a fan or even a fan of hip-hop. The story is the same for many bands and indeed many who work together. The initial period is often the most creative, where people are working together at their prime ... each person bringing their own edge to the game. Then once the fame and money comes, the egos, animosity, and resentment set in as one person is perceived to be the frontman. This leads to passive aggressive behavior that can trigger years of bitterness and fighting if communication is not optimal. The movie gives us a pretty objective viewpoint of all the members and leaves us with the underlying question ~ can we ever get back to the glory days of A Tribe Called Quest?

Yolanda Be Cool Down Under

Yolanda Be Cool ... whose name is an obvious reference to the movie Pulp Fiction, has been pumping out tunes for only two short years. Hailing from Australia, they colaborated with DCUP to release We No Speak Americano in 2010. Afro Nuts is some of their earlier work and it rocks!

The Presets Down Under

Great song and video from The Presets ... another band from Oz!

The Land Down Under

My friend Miriam, from http://www.miriaminthemidwest.com, is a sweetie. She is also an Australian resident living here. She reminded me recently how much I love Australian artists, from Midnight Juggernauts, Cut Copy and the Presets, the Church ... but these guys and INXS started it all for me as a kid ~ Midnight Oil (also known informally as The Oils to fans) inspired me deeply. Their call to action lyrics, voiced by singer Peter Garrett as he struts his stuff so uniquely in this video, powerful rhythm and driving tempo makes this one of my favorites. Thank you Miriam! I'll be highlighting Australian music this whole week on here!

Utah Saints

Utah Saints have been making great music since 1991. Jezz Willis and Tim Garbutt make up the band, whose sound is largely made up from samples. They went big with Something Good, the Kate Bush inspired tunedTim toured with Orbital, Moby, and Aphex Twin in the late 90's While Jezz hosted a radio show on Kiss 105 in the UK. They recently remixed Bring Me The Horizon - Football Season is Over.
