DRUG INDUCED TUNEAGE :: Stereodose.com

The folks at Stereodose have made a website that lets you create a playlist based on the drug you are taking and your mood. Currently, the only drugs to choose from are weed, LSD, ecstasy and shrooms (sorry speedfreaks!). The music is coming from Soundcloud. The site claims that they do not promote illegal drug use, but of course they do have to say that. You can pull it up on your your mobile phone and even register to save your favorites ... if you are not too paranoid!

LOVE AT FIRST LISTEN :: Charli XCX - You (Ha Ha Ha) (Goldroom Remix)

I fell in love with a beautiful song. It's name was Charli XCX - You (Ha Ha Ha) (Goldroom Remix). From the first moment I heard it, I was head over heals. This song was everything I wanted and everything I needed. I quickly proposed marriage and eloped to a sunny island in the Bahamas. From then on, we lived happily ever after.

DA BOMB BIZZY :: Sandro Silva & Quintino - Epic (Luminox Remix) (download)

I woke up this morning excited. After messing around for too long, I downloaded FL Studio last night and started making my own trap beats. Tunes like Sandro Silva & Quintino - Epic (Luminox Remix) have really given me the itch to start making my own music. What the hell ... Arizona native Luminox is a rising star in the trap world. His remixes have already been played by the likes of Laidback Luke and DJ Craze. Make sure you check out all his stuff on the soundcloud link below.

If there were two names I'd like to see on a song, it would by Kavinsky and Boys Noize. Kavinsky really got noticed after he produced Night Call which was used on the "Drive" soundtrack. Evil Nine feat. Danny Brown - The Black Brad Pitt

With lyrics like - "Never shave my pubes bitch my nuts stay hairy, All up in your teeth, ya gotta pick it out ... STREAMING RADIO SPOTLIGHT :: Sanctum.fm

Sanctum.fm is a Detroit based online streaming radio station, pumping out the best in Electronic music. You can tune in anytime at: http://stream.sanctum.fm:8060/listen.m3u

I first met Sanctum.fm's Adam Krikorian at a Burner event in Chicago in 2011. I had the chance to interview him recently about Sanctum.fm and the scene in general.
Check it out below -

Thanks for doing this ... so first of all, how long has Sanctum.fm been on the air?
It's my pleasure! We've been on the air since April 20th, 2011.

Cool, what motivated you to start a streaming radio site? and I just noticed the 4/20 reference!
Well, for starters my family has worked in radio since before I was born so it was one of those things that always felt really comfortable to be a part of. I've always felt that the future of broadcasting is online and that the real way to bring people what they want is to bypass the standard, over-glamorized nonsense that the existing industry benefits from. So I felt like, considering the immense wealth of talent our Detroit scene has, why not give that scene a voice?

Barrel~dEM started in May 2011, coincidence? Actually, meeting you was an inspiration for me to start blogging. I agree that Detroit has a ton of talent ... have you ever been involved with promoting events in Detroit or elsewhere?
Really? That's really great to hear, man. The night we met, I was really blown away by the kindness exhibited to myself and my small band of Detroiters by the local Chi-Town scene. Very cool crowd. To answer your question, I have actually never been involved with promoting or throwing events in the city. Or really anywhere. I've always been a stay-at-home kinda guy, more opting to enjoy the music than the party. But meeting the local Burning Man community in the Metro Detroit area pulled me right out of my shell! I couldn't help but get myself involved!

Yeah, that was a very memorable night for me as well. Who else is involved with running Sanctum.fm?
We have three of us that run most of the station. I act as station head (read: first to blame, hehe), we have John Bowman as our web director and we have Jason McCombs as a technical adviser/show planning. Basically the crew is the three of us, plus my lovely girlfriend who we have deemed our "security fairy" (she runs our door and regulates on spunions). It's a small crew.

"Security fairy" eh, I need to get me one of those! I know that your music tastes are all over the map, like myself ... but can you give us a few of your favorite artists / dj's right now?
I'm telling you, find yourself a lady with the guts to yell at your show's patrons and you're in business! As for music I'm into right now, I'd say I'm the most taken by the forays into what's being most commonly referred to as "future garage" as well as "turbofunk". If I were to pick specific people, I'd say Birdee, NaZaretH, D3adl1ne, mr. Beeb, Hoodsex, Reset!, Justin Martin, Earsley...man, I could do this all night.
Can I just send you a 50 page list? haha

You can send me music anytime! I crave it like a dope fiend craves heroin. We've both seen dubstep and trap music get popular in a big way. What do you think will be the next big genre to come out of EDM?
Well, I HOPE we finally get to that point where we can embrace the collective need for all these sub-genres to blend together! I think as far as emerging genres, we haven't seen the beginning of what the scene is capable of. I don't even want to try and guess where it'll head next. I suspect it'll be an amalgamation of what we all already dig. I'd LOVE to see more drum and bass (I keep hearing rumors that jungle is coming back!) and obviously I'd like to see more 2-step/Garage (because I play the bejesus out of it). But there's really no way to tell and I genuinely love surprises!

Well, it's a fact that dubstep is an amalgamation (love that word, btw) of drum n bass and dub music and trap is a blend of trance and rap. Maybe we'll see the emergence of fechno (folk and techno) or a whole genre of Gaga based music ... lol. I'd like to see Garage music get big again. Who knows where Moombahton or Glitch will lead to? Anything else you want to add before we wrap up here?
Definitely! I also highly suggest JPOD the beat chef if you're into that folk-steppy biz. As for closing commentary - I'd like to thank you for giving me this opportunity to share with your readers what we're all about. It's a privilege to be a part of the local scene in Detroit as well as the global scene online. We love what we do and love being able to share it with the world. If you're curious about us and want to learn more, get at us online both at our website (www.sanctum.fm) and/or on the usual social media outlets. Also: remember that we are ALWAYS on at sanctum.fm/listen

Thank you Adam!

Nick Drake - Pink Moon

Nick Drake was a complicated soul. Born in Rangoon, Burma in 1948 - Drake's parents then moved to Warwickshire, England where Nick was raised to appreciate music by his mother. He learned to play piano at an early age and began to compose his own songs which he recorded on a reel-to-reel tape recorder. In 1965, he formed a band, The Perfumed Gardeners with schoolmates. With Drake on piano and occasional alto sax and vocals, the group performed Pye International R&B covers and jazz standards, as well as Yardbirds and Manfred Mann numbers. In 1966, Drake won a scholarship to study English literature at Fitzwilliam College, University of Cambridge. He delayed attendance to spend six months at the University of Aix-Marseille, France, beginning in February 1967. While in Aix, he began to practice guitar in earnest, and to earn money would often busk with friends in the town centre. Drake began to smoke cannabis, and that spring he travelled with friends to Morocco, because, according to travelling companion Richard Charkin, "that was where you got the best pot". Drake most likely began using LSD while in Aix, and lyrics written during this period—in particular for the song "Clothes of Sand"—are suggestive of an interest in hallucinogens.

Drake signed to Island Records when he was 20 years old and a student at the University of Cambridge, and released his debut album, Five Leaves Left, in 1969. By 1972, he had recorded two more albums—Bryter Layter and Pink Moon. Neither sold more than 5,000 copies on initial release. Drake's reluctance to perform live, or be interviewed, contributed to his lack of commercial success.

Drake suffered from depression, particularly during the latter part of his life. This was often reflected in his lyrics. On completion of his third album, 1972's Pink Moon, he withdrew from both live performance and recording, retreating to his parents' home in rural Warwickshire. There is no known footage of the adult Drake; he was only ever captured in still photographs and in home footage from his childhood. On 25 November 1974, Drake died from an overdose of amitriptyline, a prescribed antidepressant; he was 26 years old. Whether his death was an accident or suicide has never been resolved.

Dr Dre - The Chronic 20 Years Later

NPR has a great story on the 20th anniversary of Dr. Dre's groundbreaking album The Chronic, the L.A. Riots and how gangster rap went mainstream.

This album played an important role in my own music education. In 1993, I was a young "white boy" in the army stationed in Germany. When this album hit, it was played everywhere ... where I worked and in the barracks. Before then, I wasn't really a fan of rap, but this one grew on me. I eventually bought the album myself and was then turned onto more hip hop like A Tribe Called Quest, Outkast, and the Hieroglyphics Crew. 20 Years later the album sounds as fresh as ever. The production on this one is probably the best I've ever heard. Enjoy the full album and studio outtakes below -

0:00 - The Chronic (Intro) (feat. Snoop Dogg), 1:58 - Fuck Wit Dre Day (And Everybody's Celebratin') (feat. Snoop Dogg, RBX and Jewell), 6:50 - Let Me Ride (feat. T&A Records = Moombahton Forever (download)

Moombahton has largely been overshadowed by the popularity of trap music lately. That's unfortunate because, like trap music, Moombahton is also a combination of EDM and music that was already popular. Please enjoy this compilation. From soundcloud:

"This compilation is a snapshot of Moombahton in 2013, nearly three years after Dave Nada slowed dutch house down to reggaeton tempo for a basement full of buckwild Latino kids in Baltimore. All the major players in the nascent genre come together with their A-game on Moombahton Forever, from originators Nadastrom, Sabo and Munchi to early adopters Heartbreak, Tittsworth, Ayres, Sazon Booya, Pickster and Melo to rave superstars Craze, GTA and Dillon Francis. All facets of the movement are represented: wild dutch synths (Deth, How Y'all Feel), huge buildups (Alerta, Dibby Dibby), reggaeton rhythms (Mami Whine It Up, La Brasilena), moombahcore (Gotta Know, Killa), deep vibes (Vibracion, Suenos), weird experimentalism (Savage Beauty, Club 219), and even a tempo tool from Moombahton to house (Eat It)."

Belanger - MIDNIGHT DIAMOND (RADIO EDIT)

It's tough to make a good stew. You have to have just the right ingredients and the right amounts to keep the overall taste just right. Belanger is a first rate chef with delivery of Midnight Diamond. A mash of Rihanna/SIA's 'Diamonds' vs the Eric Prydz remix of M83's 'Midnight City' makes for a good pot.

THERE'S NOT ENOUGH BEARD IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD :: The Beards - No Beard No Good (live)

This is the best song ever!!! The Beards go on a rant about the importance of beards, or evilness of not having one rather. I say never trust anyone who doesn't have facial hair ... ladies excluded?!?! I don't think so ... hahaha

From their accents, The Beards must be from down under. They all have beards and their music is very hairy. Let's get these guys on the road with ZZ Top stat!

SOLD MY SOUL :: Robert Johnson - The Complete Recordings (Full Album) (download)

In the 1920's, a guitar player walked down to the crossroads at midnite. There he met the Devil who tuned his guitar so that to give him mastery of the instrument.

This is the core of a legend attributed to Robert Johnson, a blues musician from Mississippi. Little is actually know about him. His records were played on stage at a concert in Carnegie Hall. He was thought to be dead at that time, but there are conflicting stories. One story claimed that he was killed by a jealous husband who had given a bottle of whiskey containing poison. There are so many variations and legends of this guy, there are books and active researchers still trying to find out who he was, perhaps we will never know.

Wikipedia provides a ton of details on the knowns and unknowns of this man. There is a complete Radiolab Podcast covering the legend of Robert Johnson as well.

Whoever this guy was, his influence on popular music is immeasurable.

WE ARE FAMILY :: Adam & The Ants - Kings of the Wild Frontier

I absolutely love this drum heavy Adam & The Ants song. Released in 1980, when some of the best post-punk meets new wave music was being made. The album, of the same title as the song, is definitely recommended if you haven't heard it.

JE T'ADORE :: Miracle Fortress - Hold Your Secrets to Your Heart

All the best music seems to be coming out of Montreal lately. Miracle Fortress aka Graham Van Pelt is one of those artists. Hold Your Secrets to Your Heart has 4 lines repeated -

Hold your secrets to your heart,
where the love can build its heat,
where it hurts when we're apart.
where I'm hiding in your blood.

It's a beautiful thing to behold. Make sure you check out the one below as well.

Bipolar Bear - Old Cuts

There's not much information out there about this band except that the track is from the album Harlem Pripyat from the Mexican Summer label. I came across this tune while watching the 2011 film "Dragonslayer" ... a film about skater Josh "Skreech" Sandoval. The song itself is a cacophony of wailing guitars and vocals. It's a delight to the ears.

The entire album is pretty eclectic and eccentric. You can preview and purchase it on Amazon.

J-Walk - Soul Vibration (extended mix)

Do you ever hear a song and you absolutely have to find out what it's called? Of course you do. Well, that was the case with this one. Time passed and I had nothing but a hum from memory. Then today, I heard it in a commercial. I did my research and found it's origin.

Mancunians (people from Manchester U.K.) Martin Fisher and Martin Desai formed J-Walk in 1996 and released this soulful track in 2000. The duo sampled Freda Payne's "How Do You Say I Don't Love You Anymore".

JAMMIN :: Widespread Panic - Walkin' (For Your love)

One of the hardest working bands on the "Jam Band" circuit, Widespread Panic came hot out of Athens, GA in 1986. With 6 core members and 15 additional instrumentalists, the band has been steadily touring for almost 27 years now. Their fans, known affectionately as "Spreadheads sometimes travel from city to city to follow them around, similiar to the "Deadheads" who traveled with the Grateful Dead.

Their live shows are amazing. Known for never playing the same show twice, the band has a show-to-show ritual of choosing the night's setlist. At the beginning of each tour, a member of the band's road crew makes a master list of all the songs the band performs and laminates it. Each night before the show he marks the last 3 nights' set lists in different colors. The band can see what has been played recently and then decide what songs to play during the first set. They return back to the list during setbreak to pick songs for the second set, and likewise, return after the second set for any additional sets if playing more than two, or the encore. as of 2011, they hold the record for number of sold-out performances at Red Rocks Amphitheatre (Morrison, Colorado) at 38 and Philips Arena (Atlanta, Georgia) at 17.

The catchy Walkin' (For Your love) comes from their second self-titled album released in 1991. If you are a fan, I'd recommend the documentary The Earth Will Swallow You.

Godspeed You Black Emperor - Storm

There are few bands in the world like Godspeed You Black Emperor. The band started in 1994 in Quebec, Montreal Canada by Efrim Menuck (guitar), Mike Moya (guitar), and Mauro Pezzente (bass). The band initially assembled after being offered a supporting act for another local band named Steak 72. Thereafter, the trio performed live on a few separate occasions, before ultimately deciding to produce an album. The cassette, All Lights Fucked on the Hairy Amp Drooling, was self-released in December 1994 and limited to thirty-three copies.

After the limited release of the cassette, the band quickly expanded and continued to perform live periodically. According to Menuck, joining the group was quite simple: "It was like if anyone knew anybody who played an instrument and seemed like an okay person, they would sort of join up. In short order, the group's numbers ebbed and flowed. Local musicians would often join the band for a handful of performances, then depart. The revolving door nature of the group's membership frequently caused it strain before the release of F♯ A♯ ∞. After that release, the group stabilized around a nine-person lineup with Menuck, Moya and David Bryant on guitars, Pezzente and Thierry Amar on bass guitars, Aidan Girt and Bruce Cawdron on drums, and Sophie Trudeau and Norsola Johnson on violin and cello respectively.

Considered by some to be the best post-rock band ever, their songs are always epic. Storm was released in 2000 on the double album Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven. The album contains 4 tracks, with each track containing continuous songs. Storm is made up off -

1. "Lift Yr. Skinny Fists, Like Antennas to Heaven..." 6:15
2. "Gathering Storm/Il Pleut à Mourir [+Clatters Like Worry]" 11:10
3. "'Welcome to Arco AM/PM...' [L.A.X.; 5/14/00]" 1:15
4. "Cancer Towers on Holy Road Hi-Way" 3:52

The world needs more musicians like this ... defining what music is and what a song should be.

Considered by some to be the greatest Trance / Progressive album of all time, Sasha's Airdrawndagger raised the bar in the EDM world in 2002 and greatly influenced a minimal sound which was becoming very popular during that time. This album builds and builds and builds. "Cloud Cuckoo" and "Bloodlock" might be my favorites here, but each track can stand on it's on merit. Along with original tracks created by Sasha, it featured appearances by Charlie May, Junkie XL and James Holden. The final track - Wavy Gravy reached #64 in the UK Singles Chart and was the basis of a remix contest held by Sasha.

MODS, VESPAS AND FUCK ALL :: The Who + Quadrophenia (full movie)

Youth culture ... what it is ... what it is. There probably no better movie that illustrates this than The Who's Quadropenia. This particular culture is about the mods, but it could easily be punks, or rockers, or skins, or ravers. The story is about a kid named Jimmy. Somewhere along the way, he associates himself with a group of mods ... he runs with them, steals and takes drugs, goes to concerts and then -- the highlight is a trip to the coast with a group of mods ... once there during the height of the tourist season, Jimmy has a grand time, runs riot in the street, falls in love, finds an idol. He later returns to Brighton in the off season after falling out with his parents, only to find that his idol is a hotel doorman. Jimmy loses it and steals, his idol, Ace's prized scooter an drives off a cliff.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT :: Mansions on the Moon (download)

Did you ever want to live on the Moon? I did. It would be so easy to build a mansion there, with very little gravity and plenty of rock. I never gave up on that dream and neither did this band. Mansions on the Moon was formed in 2011 in Virginia Beach, VA. They were comprised of Ted Wendler on guitar and vocals, Ben Hazlegrove on keyboards, and Lane Shaw on drums. Both Shaw and Hazlegrove were also members of Pnuma Trio. Jeff Maccora later joined on bass.
Their first release, Paradise Falls (Presented by Diplo & DJ Benzi), garnered the attention of many prominent blogs and in 2011 hypetrak called them one of the "most interesting recording artists to have emerged this year." Paradise Falls includes collaborations with Xaphoon Jones (of Chiddy Bang), Deadmau5, Washed Out, and Big Gigantic, among others. The trio has worked closely with members of N*E*R*D, and Pharrell Williams served as executive producer on their 2012 EP Lightyears.
The group has produced official remixes for Foster the People and Zee Avi, and produced the Mac Miller track "PA Nights" on the album Blue Slide Park. In 2011 the group joined Wiz Khalifa and Mac Miller on the Green Carpet Tour, and also performed at the Snowball Music Festival. In 2012 they played South by Southwest and the Lightyears Tour. Here's some songs for you to enjoy, some from Lightyears and some remixes.
