NEW CONTRIBUTORS = BETTER CONTENT :: Leon Bridges - Coming Home

Barrel~dEM Leon Bridges - Coming Home

Leon Bridges - Coming Home

I'm posting today in anticipation of 2 new future contributors Heather aka H-Bomb and Britney aka Minx. Both have very eclectic ... very excellent musical taste. H-Bomb collects old vinyl ... mainly, 50's soul and turned me on to Leon Bridges. This guy can croon with the best of them.

Thankful for What We've Got (Gangster Leans): William DeVaugh remixes

Oh damn, this groove was the perfect soundtrack for my drive back from a sunset beach trip last Friday. It's funky-as, pushes a positive attitude and gratitude and includes the lyric 'gangster lean' - I mean, c'mon! I texted three people to turn on and tune up their radios to PBS' "Smoke and Mirrors" show to join me in my personal party. Listen to this killer community supported radio station here.

The original William Devaugh track, "Be Thankful for What You've Got" (at the end of this post) is already funky as hell and DJ Day made the mix I heard last week.

Then I go to share it with you and in true SeriousStuff fashion, I find a bunch of other versions that rock my world and pop my hips just as hard. I simply refuse to choose.

And it turns out that Massive Attack's did a version too.. This guy must be getting some serious residual payments..

Oh and by the way, here's the original:

Nina Simone - Strange Fruit (ID Crysis Rework) (download)

We've covered ID Crysis before at Barrel~dEM, this time the London-based producer has reworked Nina Simone's Strange Fruit ... and it sounds delicious. The tune is haunting and incredibly simple, yet beautiful at the same time. If you haven't heard the original, I highly recommend that you check it out below as well.

VIRTUAL KING :: James Blake + Brian Eno - Digital Lion

How do you make a quiet song massive? You get the king of swoon and the innovator of ambient to collaborate. The result is Digital Lion - a 5 minute opus! This song starts off gently and then builds, but only slightly. Whether you are meditating or making love ... this one will do the trick.

Look for Blake's new album Overgrown to come out next month.

RARE GROOVE :: American Gypsy - Inside Out

Since 1963, this funk group of American origin has performed under diverse names such as Blue Morning, Orpheus and Pasadena Ghetto Orchestra. American Gypsy began club performances in Los Angeles in 1971, followed by a two-year tour of Spain. When the group settled in Amsterdam, The Netherlands in the early 70's, the line-up was: Joe Skeete (bass guitar), Michael Hamane (lead guitar), Lorenzo Mills (vocals), Richard James aka Ricardo James (drums), David Harrell (vocals, guitar, sax, flute) and Steve Clisby (vocals, keyboards). During their American period, individual members recorded sessions with many popular artists: Barry White, The Byrds, Young Rascals, Frank Zappa, Jefferson Airplane, Dr. John and Santana.

They continued live club performances throughout Europe and was one of the more popular r&b/rock acts on the club circuit during that time.

Lion Babe - Treat Me Like Fire (Star Slinger Bootleg Mix) (download)

Manchester based Star Slinger aka Darren Williams has done a fabulous rework of Lion Babe's Treat Me Like Fire. The vocals give this song so much soul. Williams has added an incredibly infectious beat and accompanying synth to make this one worth listening to over and over.

LOVESTEP :: Birdy - People Help The People (TIP's Sunken Hearts rework)

Seems like minimal soul / R & B is making waves these days. First, you have James Blake then Frank Ocean and now this ... the original song is pretty good, but DJ and Londoner TIP or Two Inch Punch has really amped up the soul on this Sunken Heart remix. Light the incense, slip into a bubble bath with a glass of red and crank this one up on repeat. Your soul will thank you!

KING OF SWOON :: James Blake - Retrograde

Still fairly young on the scene, London-based James Blake has really carved out a niche for himself since his debut in 2009. Since then, he's had two big hits - Limit to Your Love and The Wilhelm Scream. In 2011, he was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize and he's only just started. Retrograde is a sensual love jam, and like many of his songs, his voice overpowers the instruments and therefore becomes the focus.

His second album Overgrown will be released on April 8.

J-Walk - Soul Vibration (extended mix)

Do you ever hear a song and you absolutely have to find out what it's called? Of course you do. Well, that was the case with this one. Time passed and I had nothing but a hum from memory. Then today, I heard it in a commercial. I did my research and found it's origin.

Mancunians (people from Manchester U.K.) Martin Fisher and Martin Desai formed J-Walk in 1996 and released this soulful track in 2000. The duo sampled Freda Payne's "How Do You Say I Don't Love You Anymore".

No Boats' Top Five on Friday

In no particular order, from no particular time period ... these are the tracks that frequent my playlist again and again

Public Enemy - Harder Than You Think (Featurecast Remix)

The Featurecast remix throws just a little bit faster and harder edge on the original track. This song is the feel good song of my life right now.

Major Lazer - Get Free feat Amber Coffman(of Dirty Projectors)

This one takes me back to Jamaica everytime I hear it .... big ups Major Lazer. Seriously, lately when I've been working the 12 hour long nightshift ... this tune and thoughts of my girlfriend keep me going.

Monitor 66 - Triscuits

What can I say? This one takes me back to roller skating, first loves and smooth jams ... this song's got me twisted!

Yasiin Bey (aka Mos Def) - Niggas in Poorest

This song makes me wanna start a revolution ... best thing from the one they used to call Mos Def since Black on Both Sides. Yasiin is real ... he is the real deal. His spirituality coincides with Islam and I have no problem with that. At least he is seeking a higher plane.

The tune is a take on Kanye and Jay-Z's "Niggas in Paris" from last years Watch The Throne whose materialism and bling bling trapism make it a complete dichotomy to Yasiin's version (I wonder what they think of the remake?). This is the first track of Yasiin Bey's Top 40 Underground Project which takes popular top 40 hip hop and refixes it underground styleeee ... enjoy!

Richard Davis - Self Destruct (Mario & Vidis Redo)

So smooth ... so true. Every love has a chance to self destruct ... the fire burning too bright and all that shit. The sounds here are so classic and yet fresh that I can't get enough. Holla if ya hear me ... Holla if ya feel me.

Happy friday and have a fuckin great weekend,
Noble aka No Boats

It's my pleasure to spotlight a very talented young artist. Brian is an independent singer songwriter who mostly sings folk, acoustic, and soul music that seems to have a message centered on freedom, self expression, expansion, love, and truth.

He's been at it for about 3-4 years on and off now and has encountered some success in the past year.
