Pixies - Gouge Away / Dan Deacon - Crystal Cat

Sitting at Streetside Grill here in Chicago with Switch killa listening to The Pixies - Doolittle album ... there's a party party guy sitting across the bar shaking his shoulders back and forth and the unique odors of the neighboorhood are mixing with the scent of stale ale....and here is my friend Kevin, who I see everywhere now. Hey brotha, how ya doing? Let me get your facebook info ... were you sitting there the whole time? See ya later! Hey Meg ... do you like Dan Deacon? Hell Yeah! I saw him twice ... once in St. Louis and once at the Metro! Are you kicking me? Yes.

Planet of the Apes -The Musical

Since it's old school weekend here, why not check out the original old school movie musical ~ Planet of the Apes. "Dr. Zaius ... Dr. Zaius!"

Dennis Christopher feat. Whitney Houston - It's Not Right (Mischa Daniels Remix)

Sexy Saturday - Suede

Welcome to my first installment of Sexy Saturday, wherein I bring you hot, sexy tunes from all over the musical spectrum. Who better to start with than Suede, pioneers of Britpop. This Hollywood Life pairs dirty guitars with Brett Anderson's pleading vocals to create a soundscape that is gritty, sexy, and oh so tasty.

Dieselboy - East Coast Science 1 mixtape (1996)

Still my favorite drum n bass mixtape ever. Dieselboy gave the UK drum n bass DJ's a run for their money and introduced a whole generation of Americans to liquid snares and beautiful melodies. Dieselboy aka Damian Higgins is still doing his thing. He is the founder of Human Imprint records.

Dieselboy - East Coast Science 1 (1996) by Dieselboy

Omni Trio - Renegade Snares

8.26.2011

Chemical Brothers - Morning Lemon

Everything reminds me of music ... for example ~ My roommate just got a call from her friend Lemon and I immediately thought of this tune. "Morning Lemon" was the B-side to the Chemical Brothers "Block Rockin Beats" single ... and one of my favorite Chemical Brothers songs.

DJ Sparx - "Obliverated"

The rave scene in Cleveland was vibrant and active in the 90s, with DJs like Mike Filly, Rob Sherwood, and Dan Curtain. Some amazing parties happened in that town, including the first ever 420 party, thrown by Spawntaneous Productions. I was lucky enough to attend.

Among the DJs in Spawntaneous' roster was Mike Sparks aka DJ Sparx, who I befriended for a time when I lived there. I was given one of his mixes on cassette, which thankfully is still in my possession, albeit a bit worse for wear. I was able to convert it to MP3, though I had to use some scotch tape.

Please enjoy Mike's mix in its crunchy, old school glory:

Shy FX - Original Nuttah

Dope Skillz - Six Million Ways To Die

A selection from J's personal collection.

Missy Elliott - Pass That Dutch (Angger Dimas remix)

These sounds fall into my mind...

This was such a hit with the kids back in 1995. We all loved it until it got so played out we had to hate it to be cool. Makes me want to do a little Philly slide...

Best of Techno vol. 3

Still rocking it old school...

Best of Techno Vol. 3 is a magical compilation which introduced me to Acen, and provided background music to many, many road trips.

Nearly every track on this comp is amazing (save for Sesame's Treet). I've already shared several, so I thought i'd highlight a few more.

Hot breaks, and a bit of magic piano

More hot breaks, and some magic synth

and everyone's favorite:

Ride - Taste live in Brixton 1992

It really chaps my hide when major record labels disable embedding on the Youtube videos. What's up with that? "You can watch our videos, but only on the approved site." Anyway, enough ranting. Ride has always been one of my favorite shoegaze bands. Nowhere was their best album in my opinion. Enough talk ... here is the live version of Taste due to embedding restrictions. Enjoy!

KEYS N CRATES - ALMOST 39 MINUTES (mix)

Keys N Crates are a trio from Toronto, Canada ... they are also bad-ass party bringers. They use live instrumentation, turntablism, and sampling to bring the funk. What a funk they bring! Check out the mix. If it doesn't get you up and dancing ... then double your money back!

ALMOST 39 MINUTES by Keys N Krates

Project 1 - Roughneck

Something's Happenin

2011-08-23 mini mix by Andy Crowe

A really quick mix of the Something Else track from the other day, then this heat featuring "Biblical Jones" (love it), and then this classsssic cutup from Cajmere & Ferris.

Holy crap I leave for Burning Man in roughly 72 hours. Barely contained here. I should come back with some goddamn full-length mixes recorded out there.

Safe Travels to Burning Man

Well, it's that time of year and Captain Andy and Serious Stuff are heading to the playa. I want to wish them both, as well as all my other Burner friends, a safe and pleasant journey. Drink lots of water and take care of yourself. A week in the desert can be a long time.

Lush - Desire Lines

Thanks Switch Killa for the shoegaze ... I'll have to follow with one of my favorite shoegaze bands - Lush. Lush, with a line-up of Meriel Barham (vocals), Emma Anderson (guitar), Miki Berenyi (guitar), Steve Rippon (bass), and Chris Acland (drums), burst onto the scene in 1990 with the single Sweetness and Light. Having produced four major albums, they split up in 1998 after their drummer, Chris Acland, committed suicide. Desire Lines is great for going to sleep by. At 7:30 long, the song goes through a range of emotions, builds to climax starting at 3:46 with one of my favorite guitar breakdowns ever, then settles back down.

bedtime meditation

it's an earworm that won't leave me til morning.

Chapterhouse - Whirlpool

I've had a massive love for shoegaze since I was 15. Whirlpool often found its way into the casette deck of my Mazda MX-3. Not only is it lovely driving music, but there's a kitty on the cover.

While I will always have an affinity for Chapterhouse's special brand of dreaminess, I have to admit, one of the comments on the "Pearl" video made me giggle heartily.

Chapterhouse - Pearl (Whirlpool - 1991) - YouTube

Metro Station - Control (Steve Aoki remix)

M83 - Sister part 2

Time is Tight/Wont Let Me/After Time

This is Serious Stuff o'er here.

I got my hair did today.

And I had to wait...

...and one of these songs came on while I was waiting, one features an eerily similar do as my hairdresser galpal and the other one is just super rad.

I'll let you work it out.

Michael Hedges

Michael Hedges was amazing, and very difficult for me to explain. Allow me to do so in YouTube format:

no one can create sounds from one instrument quite like Michael Hedges. Sadly, his life was cut short by a car accident at the age of 43.

Harp Guitar!

Mots pressés, mots sensés, mots qui disent la vérité...

I first heard Wordy Rappinghood but a few years ago, when J spun it during one of our marathon mixing sessions.

Listening to Tom Tom Club always makes me think about Adrian Belew

...and how much I love Inner Revolution, by the way. I accidentally picked it up while trying to locate an Alison Moyet album. Got the names mixed up. I was young!

and somehow, someway, this all ends up with the Communards.

Date With The Rain

I am hoping this will post properly, since youtube is blocked at work. flying blind here! However, I had to share some Jamie Principle today, it's simply the right thing to do:

Miriam aka Serious Stuff

Henceforth on this blog ... Miriam will also be known as Serious Stuff!

Wonky Dynamo - Never Loved Before (Shur-I-Kan Neverland remix)

I've got this on vinyl - top tune!

Wonky Dynamo - Never Loved Before (Shur-I-Kan Neverland remix)

OMG - Surkin is the shit!

A couple of months in and I have yet to post Surkin. WTF is wrong with me? Surkin is everything good about dance music these days ... driving beat, old school samples, and the guy looks like he is 12. I saw him a few years back with Para One at Darkroom, here in Chicago ... one of the best shows of my life! Here's a few pics from that show.

Now check out the music ~

Surkin - White Knight Two

Surkin - Silver Island

and last, but definitely not least...

Surkin - Easy Action

Bill Withers - Lovely Day

Well, I see Miriam's roller disco post and now I'm in a disco mode ... I'm so musically OCD over here, but hey that's a good thing, right. Anyway ... this little gem from 1977 is already making this a Lovely Day!

Platipus Records

Platipus Records was a popular trance music record label that was based in London, UK. It was founded in 1993 by Simon Berry. The early releases were almost exclusively limited to Berry's various projects, including Union Jack, Clanger, and Art of Trance. Later, the label included artists like Dawnseekers and Quietman.

After 17 years, Platipus Records stopped trading in April 2010. Simon Berry and the label's artists have since then been relaunched under a new label, Porcupine Records.

Terra Ferma Featuring I-Ching - Obelix (Terra Ferma remix)

Union Jack - Two Full Moons And A Trout (Exclusive 14" Remix) - Platipus Records Classic

POB - Boiler (Humate Mix)

The Thrillseekers - Dreaming of You (Original Mix)

The sky is cloudy ... look's like rain. I guess I'm in a trance mood today. I gotta say, I get a little nostalgic listening to this one....

Flight Facilities - Foreign Language feat. Jess

So glad to get another track from Flight Facilities ("Crave You" being their hooky-as-hell first single). I was supposed to see them open for Bag Raiders in Australia, but they didn't show up.

Does anybody else desperately want to roller disco now?!

Savage Skulls Feat Robyn - Bad Gal (Crookers Remix)

Although, Crookers have been around since 2006, Phra and Bot have been working together since 2003 after they met up in Milan. The duo DJed the in-game radio station ElectroChoc in the game Grand Theft Auto: The Ballad of Gay Tony, which is based around the nightclub scene of Liberty City.

I Need Some More

Can I have some more?

Wake up and don't be afraid of the future....

Two Great Songs with a Bad-ass animated video

Shakedown - Love Games

Royksopp - Remind Me

Royksopp - Remind Me by hrothgar78

THE WHO "QUADROPHENIA" - REIGN O'ER ME

The story covers about five days of the life of a certain Jimmy, a participant in the circa 1964 Mod lifestyle in England. "The story is set on a rock!" announced the composer, Pete Townshend, at one live performance, indicating that the opera represents Jimmy's looking back at the events of the previous day or two that led him into the gloomy situation where he finds himself at the end of the story. The narrative is difficult to derive from the lyrics alone, but becomes clearer with the benefit of a short story (also written by Townshend) related from Jimmy's first person perspective, that is included in the album's booklet.

The first half of the opera consists of songs that allude to the frustrations and insecurities that govern Jimmy's life, including brief glimpses of his home life, his job, his psychoanalyst, and his unsuccessful attempts to have a social life. Halfway through the opera he sings "I've Had Enough", finds himself kicked out of his home when his parents find his box of 'blues' (blue pills of some unnamed drug, possibly amphetamine) (this happens in the song Cut My Hair). Distraught and with nothing better to do, Jimmy takes a large dose of blues and takes a train ride to the coast (Embodied in the song 5:15, which is supposed to be the time when the train departs). During his stay near the beach in Brighton, he encounters the former "Ace Face", the leader of a group of Mods, whom he admires greatly. However, "Ace Face" now works as a bell boy at a nearby hotel. Ironically, this is the very same hotel Ace Face had smashed the windows of two days before. This display of masculine bravado had earned him the admiration of many of his fellow Mods two days before during Jimmy's first stay in Brighton. Jimmy is disgusted to learn that the person he had admired as a Mod had "sold out".

At this point, Jimmy is inconsolable. Everybody from his parents to his girlfriend had disappointed him before, but he had never expected the Mod lifestyle to let him down. Drunk and depressed, he steals the now former Ace Face's scooter from the front of the Brighton hotel where he is employeed, takes it out to a barren rock protruding from the sea, and crashes psychologically. With nothing left to live for he finds redemption in the pouring rain, which is expressed in the final song, "Love, Reign o'er Me".

What is it with cute girls and strange love interests in videos lately?

Watch yo shit - Bag Raiders are about

Bag Raiders (another show at the Mid I recently had to miss cause Chicago's got just too much super stuff going on), a bouncy Aussie dance party outfit, came on my Pandora just now. And since I've got this line of communication open to me, I'm exploiting it.

The Eyes

this little nugget of 60s garage came floating out of J's laptop this afternoon, and it tickled me, so I thought I'd share.

Detroit Puts Out: Com Truise, Phantogram and Glitch Mob

I went to Detroit a few weeks ago and MOTORCITYBLOG hooked me UP! (Check them out - a super great site covering any and everything interesting happening in Detroit and chock full of swag opportunities.) Here's a mini version of the show at the Magic Stick they sent me (+ a few friends) to on their press list.

Com Truise

Phantogram

Glitch Mob

And my own vid of the show:

Patti Jo - Make Me Believe in You (Tom Moulton mix)

I dropped this tune during my set on Friday night and had the folks on the dance floor doing the shuffle. Classic, classic tune ... one of my favorites! Welcome aboard Miriam ... thank you to you, Captain Andy and Switch killa for making me one happy blogger!

You Don't Know What You've Got Till It's Gone

Joni Mitchell never lie.

I fell in love with The Twelves' remixes 12 hours after they played the Mid (with a Junior Boys' DJ set opener no less!) last weekend... this is my dream mini version of the show.

I love the Lemon Jelly track they mix into, here it is in it's entirety. (*Trivia! I had a still of this video that I didn't know was a still of this video as my desktop background for a long time and only just this weekend discovered this song!)

Australian (pop-folk) Invasion

Sleep Decade are local lads from my neck of the woods. I swear they're gonna blow up quick.

The Holidays' first album (very island rock/pop) was my beach trip soundtrack last summer.

Finally, Gotye is a ridiculous musical mad genius who is seemingly obsessed with oh-so-raw break up songs.  Anyway, this single (with Kimbra - you know her 'Settle Down' track, right? Ah stuff it, I'll include it too) is from his new album that was released last week.

And this track of his still gives me chills 5 years later.

 And here's the Kimbra track

Not as bad as herpes

I guess I kinda knew it would happen eventually. I mean getting down and dirty so often and with so many others... and yes, I'll admit it, even by myself sometimes. Sharing sick grooves and raunchy rhythms with reckless abandon with numerous strangers, friends, now more than friends.. it couldn't be helped really. It was only a matter of time before I became infected. No not herpes, but maybe something just as annoying; the need to tell others what to listen to. Well, I was invited to this infection so I guess that's a good thing.

Hi, I'm Miriam and I regularly blog on emerging social and economic structures in the American Midwest at www.miriaminthemidwest.com. I met Noble a couple of months ago and have been regularly loving new music finds from this blog and bombarding him with silly suggestions for adult contemporary radio station dance floor grooves ever since. Now you've gotten in on this action whether you like it or not. I don't know much about music genres, i just know what I like. I'm super happy to receive comments and suggestions to help me learn. My music taste is vast and varied but mostly centers around tunes that make me groove, pop princess melodies and Australian pop/folk/roots/dance music.

Ok so enough words from me....

Here is an infectious minimal techno/dub/?? tune featuring vocals from my dear friend, Angela.
Heart On A Satellite by heelsup69

I went to the Sade concert and was blown away by this.

And I recently remembered how much me and my girls loved jamming to this on our way to raves in 1998.

ESCAPE :: Joey Negro presents Akabu - Another World (Andrew Lodemann mix)

Akabu - Another World (Andrew Lodemann mix)

UPDATE 12/15/16: So I'm pretty excited to be mixing songs with my friend Elle later tonight. To get in the mood, I've been going through some older deep house stuff including this one. Joey Negro brings the sweet track and this one has the Andrew Lodemann touch. It's perfect for cocktail parties, road trips or dancing beneath the sheets.

Night Music

..imagine driving around winding roads in the mountains of Pennsylvania, on a clear night around 1am, with more stars in the sky than you can count. then put this song in the background.

I was 20 years old, and on my way to a rave in Maryland. I remember that moment like it was yesterday.

On the playlist for the return trip was Acen. And if you don't know Acen, you really, really should.

So i listened to this song over and over, cruising through the mountains and looking at the stars. Then I noticed Orion in the sky ahead of me. Except it should have been behind me...oops. I'd been driving the wrong way, for at least an hour.

Let this be a lesson kids, drive safe, and don't allow yourself to get too distracted.

Villa - Anita (download)

Villa - Anita

Inspired by Captain Andy's Poolside jaunt ... here is one of my favorite Italo Disco tunes ... classic sounding but quite new. I don't know too much about it as I pulled it from discodust.blogspot.com in 2009. Here's what they had to say-
"the good people from disco label mindless boogie, who have previously released tracks by the likes of in flagranti, peter visti, prins thomas and woolfy, bring us a sublime package of edits by fairly unknown belgium production trio villa."

I believe in the boogie, but the boogie don't believe in me

And now, the 1978 Billboard Magazine Light Radio/Heavy Disco Record of the Year!!!

Leave your worries behind....

i searched everywhere for a particular song that I, in my furiousness with insurance companies, decided to share this afternoon as a sort of therapy. Except it's not online anywhere. Much like insurance companies, i would have to jump through about 786934708923 hoops to share that song with you this afternoon. Therefore, here is some Heatwave.

I'm not a hustler baby...

But I do love this song and video!

Elsiane - Vaporous

Time for bed and sleep. wind down with some Elsiane. excited to see what new things they have coming this fall.

Beats for Lunch

My lovely and awesome girlfriend sent me this great essay about the value of actually taking lunch for a 9-5 (or whatever) worker. And I've always ascribed to that idea, but it's been on my mind since reading that. Anyway, I went home and bumped the boonta today at lunch. Here's the result, from jacky to smoove:

Popped on the classic Fishbone album last night, and it's good as ever. Sorry if there's an ad in the above video - it's their official version. Great video though. I hear Angelo Moore is a burner. What a kick to run into him out there.

This is my favorite Crystal Castles remix. Enjoy!

well hello there switch killa

Hi kids. I'm switch killa. I am very fond of music, and I am excited to be sharing. So excited, in fact, that I spurted out my first post before I even introduced myself:

Since 2007, i've been into spinning vinyl. my favorites tend to be the old chicago house, freestyle and heartthrob trax, and well, anything else that makes my booty shake. I've played out here and there, most recently at StreetSide Bar & Grill here in Humboldt. It's probably one of my favorite things in the world. I also like to broadcast on ustream from time to time, so maybe you'll catch me live sometime!

8.07.2011

Blawan - Getting Me Down

probably one of the most addictive songs i've heard in a while. booty-shakin, womp wompin good times. sadly i missed out on the limited edition vinyl.

Saturday Aug 13, 10 pm @ Secret Location on the North Side

Details:
It's taken months to find the perfect spot for us to get down, underground, and do the Safety Dance, and we've got it! Come party 'til the break of dawn in an intimate but large loft that you may have seen in the movies or at a deeply underground afterparty. We're going to transform the space for your dancing, creating, and socializing enjoyment for one night.

Move your feet to the sounds of:
Duke Shin - Bad Advice, Inc.
Marcin Albekier - Freakeasy
Magpie - p.e.t.
Puffs Baggswelle - Cleverpillar
DJ Ryan - Safety Third Productions
Noble - Barrel Dem
Los Hamburgler - Cleverpillar

Feast your eyes on creative work by:
The KnockOut Photo Booth with Ordinary Anomaly
Gordon Kummel
Ellie Sorokin
Elysia Lock
Amy J Designs
...more TBA

Space is limited for this private, invitation-only event. It's $10 in advance, and $15 at the door (if there is room). Advance RSVPs are strongly encouraged, and the only way you can ensure your spot is by donating in advance. You can reserve your spot using WePay:https://www.wepay.com/donate/safety_dance.

The northside location will be sent to all those who RSVP. It's very convenient to public transportation and cabs. It's street parking in a busy neighborhood, so carpooling is great if you have to drive.

This is a new space and cooperation with the owners and the community is key to protecting us all. Please come and go quietly, dispose of your trash properly, and do not hang around outside of the venue. Protect the community we all love and are always building.

See you there, suckahs!

Captain's First Mix

I was messing around in Traktor last night, and finally realized how easy it is to record on the fly. I had already been playing for a while, so I only recorded the last few blends. And the last one got a little shaky, but at least you know I ain't auto syncing. I realized I haven't recorded a mix in about 10 years! Definitely more to come now. Holla if you want track IDs.

PS am I monopolizing your blog, Noble? :)

Lollapalooza Remix Throwdown - Charlie Glitch go vote!!!!

Hometown: Chicago

Web Site: ghettodivision.com

Carlos Rodriguez, aka Charlie Glitch, endlessly reps Chicago. Everything the wide-ranging artist touches - from the records he presses as the label boss of budding imprint/family Ghetto Division; to the records he mixes on turntables across cities and continents; to the parties he organizes as the vibrant Southside Shakedown crew - has the classic feel of the Windy City, with a defiantly modern spin. And a heavy dose of bass. It’s no wonder he’s a local hero and underground icon throughout his city, as he continues to push and propel both the sounds and boundaries of Chicago House. But it come as no surprise that the rest of the world has taken notice as well. Rodriguez has lit up dancefloors from Chicago to Philly, New York to Amsterdam, Belgium to SXSW, sharing stages and decks with the likes of Major Lazer, DJ Funk, Farley ‘Jackmaster’ Funk, DJ Gantman, Deadmau5, Diplo - as well as opening for hip hop loyalty such as Big Boi from Outkast, Ludacris, Three 6 Mafia and Chicago’s own Kid Sister.

Born in the neighborhood of Pilsen in the lower west side of Chicago, Rodriguez grew up with music in his roots: his father was a notorious club/party DJ around the area. Inspired by his father’s vast record collection, Carlos started actively DJing at the young age of 12 at house parties and neighborhood events. By the time he was 17, he was already throwing some of the most raucous parties in his ‘hood. Fast forward to 2011, and at the age of 23 he’s been organizing and promoting the most talked-about underground parties throughout the city for the last 3 years, the truly unruly Southside Shakedown. Amongst taking over various warehouses and party spaces, Southside Shakedown even made its way to the acclaimed crossover venue in Chicago, the Metro ....

Nothing is quite like Chicago summers ... NOTHING! This tunes sums it up pretty well, well back in the 80's anyway ~

You need some Ammo for that gun

My friend Ammunition has been doing her thing for years, if you haven't seen her live, then you really are missing out on one of Chicago's most talented performers. We are having a birthday party together this Sunday at Exit. Here's her homepage ~

Daft Punk - Burnin'

One of the bangin'est house tracks around ... this one always gets the floor burning!!!!!

welcome aboard Captain Andy

What an unlikely duo, it would seem, No Boats and the Captain ... but it couldn't be further from the truth ... you see, yesterday as I opened the Captain's post and looked at the name of the band ... I just happened to be sitting poolside. So long live the duo ... and barrel dem!
