I recently came across A Tribe Called Red and I have to say I am hooked. These guys are dropping some straight moombahcore, pow wow step?!?, soca core ... genre bending tunes and they freaking rock.
Hailing from Ottawa, Canada, DJ's NDN, Bear Witness and Shub in 2008, created a never before heard sound made up of a wide variety of musical styles ranging from Hip-Hop, Dance Hall, Electronic, and their own mash-up of club and Pow Wow music, known as Pow Wow Step that is quickly gaining respect from all kinds of communities from all around the world.
These guys are definitely getting some play out from me this weekend.

RETRO BAND SPOTLIGHT :: New Model Army
New Model Army are an alternative band that formed in England in 1980. The earliest material on their debut album Vengeance (1984) was described as "crusty-punk",albeit more melodic than the works of many of their classic counterparts.
Their lyrics are often poetic, but express political and humanitarian messages. Songs like "51st State" (lyrics written by Ashley Cartwright of 'The Shakes') earned the band cult status in movements against American imperialism, but made it more difficult for the band to tour the US. The contradiction and search for truths explored in New Model Army's lyrics stem from lyricist Justin Sullivan's Quaker and literary upbringing.
Band members Justin Sullivan, Michael Dean, Dean White and Marshall Gill; were still touring as late as 2010. The latest studio album, Today Is a Good Day, was released in September 2009.

MY FIRST CONCERT :: Depeche Mode 101
When I was 15 years old, I went to my first concert with my sister. The band Depeche Mode, I had never heard of before then. Once the music started, I was hooked and have been a fan of electronic music ever since. Here are two clips ... one of Martin and Fletch playing guitars at Ernest Tubb Record Shop in Nashville ... the same day as the concert I attended. The other is from the same tour in Pasadena, CA. Man Flies Like a Bird Flapping His Own Wings

"I'm really amazed by this video, because I always dreamed about doing this: watch Dutch mechanical engineer Jarno Smeets take off by flapping wings of his own invention—just like a real bird! It's uncanny.
He developed the wings over an 8-month period. They use a special motion mechanism that is controlled by special software controlled by a haptic system. This allows him to literally start flapping his arms while running to take off and fly. Like a real bird! (Yes, I'm going to keep repeating that because this amazes me).
Like a modern Leonardo da Vinci, Jarno's took notes from nature. His inspiration was the albatross, which he closely observed to learn his take of technique:
Just like birds, humans have to amplify their locomotion to get control and get familiar with their new body expansion—the Wings. In my conception this is something which is independent of any hardware or software problem.
So he payed attention and learned how to amplify the motion. It was a success.
This first test took him just over a distance of 328 feet (100 meters) but obviously he's planning to go higher and farther than that. Jarno is ecstatic, he says: "I have always dreamed about this. But after 8 months of hard work, research and testing it all payed off."
I completely understand his excitement. This has been of dream of mine since I was a little kid. Just flap my winds and start hovering above the ground. Flap some more and start going higher and higher. [Human Bird Wings]"

A first version of Younger Brother's electronic remix of their track "Pound a Rhythm". The original is found on the 2011 album Vaccine. Recently, Younger Brother announced the release of an electronic version of Vaccine via their Facebook page.
Younger Brother is an electronic duo formed in 2003 by Simon Posford and Benji Vaughan. Their debut album A Flock of Bleeps was released in 2003, followed by The Last Days of Gravity in 2007 and Vaccine in 2011.
After making a remix for a charity record, Simon Posford (Shpongle, Hallucinogen) and Benji Vaughan (Prometheus) decided to come together in the studio to create their own type of electronic music that is generally described as “unclassifiable.”

French born Joakim does it all - club music, jazz, experimental electronic. All bear his unique style. With a background in classical music, US & UK indie rock and jazz, he discovered electronic music after a schoolfriend left his synthetiser in Joakim's room, later latching onto indie and electronic labels such as Warp and Mo Wax.
Joakim runs the Tigersushi label, releases a broad spectrum of music including Maurice Fulton, E.S.G, Poni Hoax and Metro Area. Joakim does live sets, DJs and he’s also a remixer; he’s recut tunes from Tiga, Air and Antena’s ‘Camino Del Sol’ - the latter of which was one of the biggest club tunes of 2006. Finally, he also has a live band, Joakim and the Ectoplasmic Band, on which he plays machines, keyboards, guitars and sings.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT :: Ajani Ellis 1976 - 2013 (R.I.P.)
Ajani and I have some history. We started attending raves together in the early 90's. We lived together and Ajani had the first set of Technics and a mixer that I ever played on. Ajani is married now with 2 kids but he is still producing music. Show him some love and let him know what you think of these tracks.
UPDATE: Ajani passed away this past weekend due to tragic circumstances still not yet completely known. We will miss him dearly. I'd recommend downloading these mixes and tracks because it's unsure how long they will still be available.
