Flosstradamus - Look At The Sky (feat. Deniro Farrar)

The boys from Flosstradamus have done it again! This time teaming with North Carolina emcee Deniro Farrar to create Look At The Sky a trap heavy tune which uses samples from Opus III's Fine Day. The final result is a contemporary look at spirituality through the eyes of a crack dealer. Make sure to keep an eye out for Flossy at SXSW.

A Tribe Called Quest - Once Again (BitFunk remix) (download)

A Tribe Called Quest will always be legendary. So, whenever I hear a new remix of a Tribe song ... I'm on it like white on rice. Brooklyn based BitFunk does not disappoint with his own version of Once Again. The remix is piano and vibe heavy. It might just make you pull out your old Tribe albums.

Erol Alkan & Boys Noize - Waves (Chilly Gonzales Piano Remake)

I really love the ivories, which is why I was excited to come across this Chilly Gonzales rework of Erol Alkan & Boys Noize - Waves. The effect is chilling. Chilly born Jason Charles Beck is a canadian who now resides in Germany. He started playing piano at age 3 and went on to do great things, including being nominated for a Grammy for his work with Feist in 2007. On May 18, 2009, at the Ciné 13 Théâtre (French), Paris, he broke a world record for the longest solo-artist performance with a total time of 27 hours, 3 minutes and 44 seconds, breaking a record set by Prasanna Gudi.
On September 25, 2009, he challenged singer/songwriter/fellow pianist Andrew W.K. to a piano battle at Joe's Pub in New York City. After twenty minutes of back and forth, Chilly finally threw a gold necklace at Andrew, distracting him long enough to claim victory. A rematch has been talked about but not yet organized.

Coconut Records - West Coast

I really like the fact that music has taken a turn back to the basics. This song is a prime example of how good simplifying can be. The group is lead by Jason Schwartzman (yes, the actor) with contributions by Brandon Boyd, Ben Kenney, and Schwartzman's brother Robert. The album had musical contributions by members of Incubus, as well as appearances by actresses Zooey Deschanel and Kirsten Dunst. West Coast is from their 2007 album Nighttiming.

Radio Soulwax - Under the Covers Vol.3 / Part of the Weekend Never Dies

Those pranksters of the DJ world ... The Dewaele Brothers aka Stephen and David aka 2ManyDJs aka Soulwax aka Radio Soulwax have been hard at work keeping your body grooving in one form or another since 1995. The brothers from Ghent, Belgium were the inventors of the mash-ups. They've produced original tracks, remixed others, created their own internet radio station that hosts a constant mix of different music all day and every day. It features 24 hour-long mixes with visuals similar to those used in the 2manydjs live sets, and includes music from many different decades. They've toured and played festivals all over the world with sets that sometimes include live instruments. They created a one hour mix using only 429 song intros. They are multi-talented and they aren't slowing down.

DRUMS UPON DRUMS :: Gene Krupa & Buddy Rich - Bernie's Tune

Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich were legends on the drums. Gene was the first person inducted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame and Buddy has been called the world's greatest drummer. They only made 2 albums together. One, Krupa and Rich was released in 1955. Bernie's Tune is the only one on that album that they played together on. The result is incredible 14 minute drum battle interrupted occasionally by horns.

123Mrk - future garage

Bumpin tracks by 123Mrk

These three are my faves so far:

  • "Pleasure" - a fidgety, jumpin & bumpin track with pitched vocals and introspective breaks

  • "Untroubled" - futuristic slowjamz in a church made of space rock

  • "Unrest" - an optimistic track with an electric beat and uplifting vox-bassline

WE'RE JUST BABIES MAN :: Digable Planets - Examination of What

Digable Planets were truly a unique group. A product of Afrocentric hip hop popular in the early 1990's, the Planets had funk, soul, jazz and coolness. UNITED COLORS OF KYLE :: Kid Color - Pacemaker / Parallels EP (download)

Chicago's Kyle Woods aka Kid Color is a DJ, producer and all around nice guy. He's been on the scene for more than a few years spinning and making class A remixes. Today, he dropped his new EP - Pacemaker / Parallels ... with two new electro-tinged floor fillers. Parallels builds up into a cowbell laden goody bag then rebuilds to a nice synthfull melody. Pacemaker is a little slower. It reminds me of taking a ride on Lake Shore Drive on a breezy summers day.

Mogwai - Kids Will Be Skeletons

Mogwai are a Scottish post-rock band who have been around since 1995. Their style is synonymous with lengthy guitar-based instrumental pieces that feature dynamic contrast, melodic bass guitar lines, and heavy use of distortion and effects, as you'll hear in Kids Will Be Skeletons which is actually relatively short for a Mogwai tune. Kids Will Be Skeletons is from their 2003 album - Happy Songs For Happy People.

REGGAE CLASSIC :: Toots and the Maytals - 54-46 That's My Number

The originators of Reggae music - in fact the first to use the word reggae (spelled "reggay") in the title of a song - Do The Reggay ... Toots and the Maytals have been performing for 40+ years.

Frederick “Toots” Hibbert, the frontman of the group, was born in May Pen, Clarendon, Jamaica in 1945, the youngest of seven children. He grew up singing gospel music in a church choir, and moved to Kingston in 1958 at the age of thirteen. In 1961, Hibbert met Henry "Raleigh" Gordon and Nathaniel "Jerry" Mathias, forming a group whose early recordings were incorrectly attributed to "The Flames" and "The Vikings" in the UK by Island Records. The Maytals first had chart success recording for producer Clement "Coxsone" Dodd at Studio One. With musical backing from Dodd's house band, The Skatalites, the Maytals' close-harmony gospel singing ensured success, overshadowing Dodd's other up-and-coming vocal group, The Wailers. After staying at Studio One for about two years, the group moved on to do sessions for Prince Buster before recording with Byron Lee in 1966.

With Lee, the Maytals won the first-ever Jamaican Independence Festival Popular Song Competition with their original song "Bam Bam" (later covered in a Dancehall style by Sister Nancy, and also by Yellowman in 1982). However, the group's musical career was interrupted in late 1966 when Hibbert was arrested and imprisoned for 18 months. He stated that he was not arrested for ganja, but while bailing a friend. He also stated that he made up the number 54-46 when writing 54-46 That's My Number about his time in jail.

MUSIC IS MY MEDIUM :: Elton John - Your song (with lyrics)

"It's a little bit funny this feeling inside
I'm not one of those who can easily hide
I don't have much money but boy if I did
I'd buy a big house where we both could live

If I was a sculptor, but then again, no
Or a man who makes potions in a travelling show
I know it's not much but it's the best I can do
My gift is my song and this one's for you

And you can tell everybody this is your song
It may be quite simple but now that it's done
I hope you don't mind
I hope you don't mind that I put down in words
How wonderful life is while you're in the world

I sat on the roof and kicked off the moss
Well a few of the verses well they've got me quite cross
But the sun's been quite kind while I wrote this song
It's for people like you that keep it turned on

So excuse me forgetting but these things I do
You see I've forgotten if they're green or they're blue
Anyway the thing is what I really mean
Yours are the sweetest eyes I've ever seen"

Sometimes I fumble with words ... they sound right in my head, but when I open my mouth to speak, it comes out completely wrong. I am grateful for artists like Elton John who can right what I want to say and put it with beautiful music and say everything that I want to say. I strive to write a song as simple and beautiful as this. I would sing it to my muse, the love of my life everyday. In the meantime, Miranda, this is for you. Please listen to the lyrics because they come from my heart.

your man,
Noble

KING OF SWOON :: James Blake - Retrograde

Still fairly young on the scene, London-based James Blake has really carved out a niche for himself since his debut in 2009. Since then, he's had two big hits - Limit to Your Love and The Wilhelm Scream. In 2011, he was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize and he's only just started. Retrograde is a sensual love jam, and like many of his songs, his voice overpowers the instruments and therefore becomes the focus.

His second album Overgrown will be released on April 8.

GET ON THE DANCE FLOOR :: Moon Boots - No One (download)

Some music just hits you in that sweet spot. It warms the heart and gets your feet shuffling. French Express artist Moon Boots has this down to a science. We've previously posted a lot of originals and remixes of this guy including the incredible Got Somebody. Where he's going from here is anyone's guess, but with boots like these he's clearly aiming for the sky.

DE LA BONNE MUSIQUE :: Yelle - L'Amour Parfait

Wunderkind Julie Budet aka Yelle, is also the lead singer of the band Yelle along with Grandmarnier and Tepr. Ok, so at 30, she's not exactly a child, but her energy levels are that of an adolescent. Yelle struck gold in 2007 with their single A cause des garçons. Now the are back with L'Amour Parfait which literally translates to "A Prefect Love". Enchanted lyrics over retro-electro beats are the building blocks to this track. Keep your eye on the french for repeated goodness when it comes to music.

AraabMUZIK - The Prince Is Coming

Big Ups to Abraham Orellana aka AraabMUZIK, one of the best hip hop / trap producers on the scene. We are eagerly awaiting his new album For Professional Use Only which is set to drop on 2/15. The Prince Is Coming is a banger which calls us to the sounds of the middle east. If you listen carefully, you can hear the sample "Woooo" from Busta Rhymes' "Wooooha, I got you all in check!"

TRANCE POWERHOUSE :: Craig Connelly (interview)

All things come in cycles. Trance music is not an exception. Once it was so overplayed, it dropped off the radar for a few years, but now it's been reborn. Craig Connelly is a trance DJ / Producer who started along with that second wave of trance. A fairly young fellow from Manchester UK, Craig has already worked with Gareth Emery and others. We had the chance to get an interview from his publicist -

Craig Connelly is one of those artists showing that you don’t need decades in the business to start punching with the heavyweights. He’s already gaining support from the likes of Armin van Buuren, Markus Schulz, John O’Callaghan among many more.
This rising trance star is racking up the Beatport Top 10s, headlining gigs all over the world and has just been added to the ASOT600 line up… Big things are happening for Craig Connelly, we stole a few of his rare free moments for a chat!

So you’ve just returned from playing in Matla for Trancespotting for the first time, how was it different to playing in the UK?
It was quite different; the venue was in the centre of Malta and was a rather mixed crowd.
This month you are also playing Goodgreef’s Full on Fluoro party at Sankeys in your home town of Manchester with Paul Oakenfold, are you excited?
Yeah I can’t wait. I love playing at Sankeys, and it’s awesome to play to your closest fans. I owe them a lot so hopefully I’ll deliver a smashing set.
By day you’re doing the A&R for Gareth Emery's Garuda imprint tell us more about it?
Yeah I basically scout for new music for the label and work on the admin side of things. It’s a great job to have as I get to discuss music all day with other artists and help them release their tracks. Plus I get to release my own music on the label, which means I get more creative control over the release process.
Working with Gareth must mean you developed a relationship with him? Has he taught you anything you’ve found really useful?
Yes I’d say Gareth has been the biggest single influence in my career. I’ve learned so much already, from music ideas like how to execute really big productions to helping me to make the right decisions in my DJing career. The music industry can be a minefield and I’m really lucky to have Gareth around who has been there and done it all. And naturally supporting him on the Garuda shows is a dream come true.
When did you first begin exploring dance music, how were the main influences for you at the time?
My earliest dance music memories came from an under 18’s club in town where my friends and I would go every week. They used to play a collection of European dance and trance, at the time I didn’t really know what it was but I started to collect records and gain knowledge about the different genres. My earliest influence in Trance was probably Paul van Dyk as far back as 2001/2002.
What Tech are you using during your sets?
This is a funny question as I have a Traktor setup at home, but edit/make bootlegs my tracks in Ableton, but rely on CDJ-2000s as the players when I’m in clubs, so quite a mixed bag. Ultimately I’d like to take my Traktor setup to the shows when I can.
Did you start DJing or producing first, and which one do you prefer doing?
I guess It started with collecting records/DJing, but then production took hold and that’s all I ever find myself doing my spare time. It’s been like that for years now I guess, since I was 16/17, so I’ve been writing music for about 10 years. I don’t prefer either to be honest, they are very different and I love both. There’s nothing like playing a full club with people who love your records, but I’m also quite introvert and can spend 12 hours in the studio alone making music.
Over the past 12 months you’ve amassed a lot of Beatport tops tens, what did it feel like to hear that ‘Robot Wars’ had reached #1?
It was awesome, really good to see the hard work had paid off and people really dig my music.
Do you have a favourite club?
To play in it has to be Ministry of Sound in London. But to visit I’m not sure, I was always a big fan of Air in Birmingham.
If you could play in any country around the world with a set with any DJ, past or present, who and where would you chose and why?
It would be playing back to back with someone like James Zabiela, someone really technical. And probably on a beach in Ibiza. Sounds cliché but it would be awesome to play a big outdoor festival when it’s really warm.
You’re from Manchester so are you a Man City or Man United fan?
United. : )
Tea or Coffee?
Decaf coffee as I can’t drink caffine, it sends me loopy!!
Digital or Vinyl?
If I could play on vinyl forever I would but it’s just not feasible with the amount of editing I do in Ableton for my sets haha.
What can we expect to see from Craig Connelly in 2013?
Hopefully a string of original vocal tracks, I’m currently working on 5 new originals at the moment and a few remixes. Also I’d love to mix another Garuda compilation, maybe in the fall.

NEW MUSIC :: Xander The Great

I'm getting a lot of good music in my inbox lately. One of these emails came from Xander The Great, a two-piece from Egypt and the UK, but right currently residing in London. There is Xander and the other guy is called Ed (he was the singing kid in Sweeney Todd). Bloodhound starts off with guitar melody reminiscent of Chris Issak's Wicked Games, and Somewhere Tonight is a catchy love song that will score bonus points with the ladies. I hope that we get to here more of these guys in the future.

Underworld - Two Months Off

Remember when you'd go out to see your favorite DJ and dance your face off all night long. Then you'd head to the diner with your friends at 5 am before heading to the afterparty. This song reminds me of those times ... whether it was yesterday, two months off or ten years ago. Two Months Off was the first single from Underworld's album A Hundred Days Off released in 2002. This song is just wow! You hardly hear 9 minutes songs with such intensity these days ... seriously!

Mary Lambert - More than hook and flesh

Garnering a tonne of attention for her role in singing the hook and WRITING the Macklemore and Ryan Lewis gay love anthem "Same Love", Mary Lambert is also becoming known for her large shadow, gay Christian identity and slammin soul poetry. But what about that voice? I for one knew I had to hear more than a handful of gorgeous but all too short bars in a mod-hip-hop track. So I searched for torrents. And then I found my soul, my conscience and her bandcamp page. And I PAID. You should too. http://marylambert.bandcamp.com/ seriousstuff
