Story makes a movie. It is the essence of believable characters. Rarely does a movie stir up so much emotion, and when it does ... it is a treat. Such is American Honey. 

Star (Sasha Lane) meets free-spirit Jake (Shia Lebouf) at K-Mart and the attraction is instant, Jake asks Star to go with him to Kansas with his group of partying sales crew led .... Star says no and Jake tells her if she changes her mind to meet at a local motel in the morning. After a home life of misery and being abused by her father, she decides to leave at any cost. Thus begins her travels with a rag-tag crew of young adults .... selling, hustling, and stealing.

Star instinctively seeks acceptance from Jake and then like the heroine's journey - battles her owns demons to find a state of rebirth.

American Honey's greatest gift lies in it's introduction and development of characters. It allows us to see and feel what they are going through, in a way that's very unique.

After the breakup of my girlfriend (his cousin) of 9 years, the rest of the family wouldn't speak to me for the longest, only Scotty. I cherish our friendship to this day. Drive By Truckers - What It Means

Drive By Truckers might be one of the greatest bands of the last decade. I'd only heard of them by name until my friend Ryan offered me a free ticket to see them recently and I have to say I was expecting the same old - southern rock band. What I didn't expect was the most honest southern rock band ever. The show was incredible, a whole bunch of people and good ole' boys yelling "Fuck Trump" at one point. The band had a "Black lives Matter" poster taped to their organ. It's personal down here. Atlanta is a black city surrounded by republicans so it definitely relevant around here.

Drive By Truckers have always been political, first started in Athens GA, then then recruiting from Muscle Shoals, Alabama almost 20 years ago ... the band has significantly changed over time. Their lasted album "American Band" is a no holds barred political commentary about the state of America. Rated by Paste, Rolling Stone and Rough Trade trade as the top albums of 2016.

"What It Means" is maybe the best musical white objective song to the #blacklivesmatter movement ever. This song is one to be heard on repeat. Why are we killing each other? When will it end?

I was hanging out at the local watering hole last night and ended up meeting this Bulgarian, Ivan, who was in town on business. The topic quickly turned to music and he shared this band - Smallman, with me. Later on, once I got home and was able to properly hear the music - it really resonated with me. If you love something, let it go, if it comes back to you it was always meant to be, if not it never was ... remember that quote? Well, it happened to me with this song, as it does with many others. See, I once had a catalog of thousands of digital downloads. This being one of those downloaded when I had an E-Music subscription.

I ended up not just losing one, but two hard drives filled with songs. This was one of those songs I couldn't get out of my head. I have tried to search for it, high and low using lyrics and other ways to no avail. Yesterday, I was going through Facebook memories and came across a mix I did. The download link no longer worked but the playlist was there. As I was going through it today, hoping to recreate the mix - I heard it. OMG! You can't escape from me song!

And that is the reason I blog, to share my passion with you. This is an amazing yet, simple track from Daniel Wang on his Balihu label. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

"Manny, if you don't know Jurassic Park, you don't know shit!"

Have you ever had one of those dreams that was incredibly profound and pleasant but impossible to describe in words? That's similar to the first time I watched Swiss Army man. It's easily my favorite movie right now, not just of 2016, but all time.

The movie opens with Hank (Paul Dano) stranded on an island and is about to end it all, by hanging himself. Just at the point of no return, he sees the body of Manny (Daniel Radcliffe) washed up on the beach. With some difficulty he manages to escape death and go to examine the body only to discover and lifeless, yet farting corpse. Hank gives up hope and is about to hang himself again when he sees Manny's body travelling through the surf propelled by flatulence. Hank, saw his chance and rode Manny off that tiny island.

The beautiful thing is that it's hard to know if their relationship is all in the mind of Hank, or real. As Manny becomes more conscious, Hank discovers how to use him to their advantage - storing water, chopping wood, a boner compass, shooting objects from his mouth and of course the farting. The plan is to return to civilization, but along the way, a friendship is made and life lessons are learned. Hank learns about sex, love, friendship and family from Manny, as Manny experiences self realization on these things himself.

Swiss Army Man was the first full length movie written and directed by the talented duo of Daniels (Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert). The duo had previously done movie shorts and music videos, including Lil Jon's Turn Down for What.

Go see this movie with a friend or loved one, then spread the word. People will either love or hate it, but at least they will feel it.

A few weeks ago, I went out to see some bands with my room mate. The venue was in downtown Atlanta at place called Mammal Gallery. It seemed to be a celebration of jorts or Jortsfest, as they called it. Not knowing what to expect, we walk into a nice spacious venue, bar to the right, vendor booths setup and a high energy punk band on stage. I was drawn near by their raw energy and talent. After listening for a while, I had to find out who this was - I went to ask the door guy who didn't have the lineup, but pointed me toward someone who did.

"Ummmm, looks like it's Nihilist Cheerleader on right now." he said,

Nihilist Cheerleader - was the perfect description of what I was hearing. I reached out to the band later that night on social media and Flynne Collins, the lead vocalist responded back. She agreed to interview with me and we finally got together tonight to talk.

Hello Flynne! Thank you for taking the time to talk to us today.

So, can you tell us a little bit of the band's history?

Nihilist Cheerleader started out as a two-piece with and a friend of mine on drums and playing guitar and singing. Then we added in bass and second guitar and switched drummers somewhere in between. I started Nihilist Cheerleader to have a band centered around having fun and creating healthy/engaging live performances in a somewhat dead/uniform punk scene. We all really love each other in Nihilist Cheerleader and our main goal is to have a good time with people!

It's pretty obvious not only that you vibe together, and enjoy having fun. Can you introduce the rest of the band and tell us how you met?

Soooooo... Leora plays bass and is one of my best friends, we have known each other since we were in kindergarden. Our lead guitarist is named Dylan, i met him in high school. He's one of the sweetest guy's in the world! And our Drummer is named Charley. I met Charley while participating in a thing called "Athens Face Off" where groups of 3 musicians around town are put together and given a month to put together a 15 minute set. We are all just kids that grew up in the Athens/ATL area that found our way together.

You're pretty lucky to have found your dream team, especially when touring and you have been touring a lot recently. Can you explain what its like touring in a female-led punk band in the south?

Touring is very sweaty. Otherwise, touring has really suited our band. Most all of the venues and acts we have played with have been so supportive and respectful. We met a lot of bands on tour that we want to bring to Athens. You'd think there might be some haters due to some of our content, but so far that hasn't been a huge issue ( perhaps because often times it's hard to hear what I am singing live ... haha).

Well, that's punk for ya! haha ... So here's a few questions in a row - is the band Nihilist? is the band feminist? Is the band strictly made of former cheerleaders?

We are not Nihilists and we are not cheerleaders. The name started out as something funny.... I mean a Nihilist Cheerleader ... hahaha. But at the same time, now I feel like it really fits with a the state of mind I want to evoke in our music. Nihilism is belief in nothing and cheerleading is belief. I am deeply upset by a lot of things but I want to seek solutions rather than just letting things build up. I love angry punk music, but I want there to be some light in Nihilist cheerleader songs. I hope that makes some sense. Also, the band is not feminist, but I centrainly bring feminist ideas into my lyrics.

That makes total sense. I always felt like Nihilist and Cheerleader were a dichotomy. You get your message in there for those close enough to pay attention. I know you respect Kathleen Hannah as an influence, any other influences ... I could swear, I hear some Kim Gordon influences on "Shark Fin Soup" ... am I crazy?

I'm definitely a Kathleen fan. Also definitely a Kim fan. Although, I wasn't really thinking Sonic Youth when it came to Shark fin soup. I was actually inspired by the GoGo's for that song! But Sonic Youth influences could have definitely slipped into the song without a conscious decision! We are all Sonic Youth fans-- so you're not crazy!!

I would like to think that we all are. They say that all music is subconsciously borrowing from something we've heard. Last question - what's your music guilty pleasure?

Oh god I have a lot, but I've been listening to Ashlee Simpson recently because she was one of my fav musicians in the third grade ... haha. 

I mean her whole lip-sync scandal was messed up but her songs at least have sort of a powerful independent women thing going at least.

Hope Nihilist Cheerleader doesn't start sounding like Ashlee Simpson haha!

Battles have been bringing their experimental sound to the masses since 2002. The current line-up is guitarist/ keyboardist Ian Williams (formerly of Don Caballero and Storm & Stress), guitarist/ bassist Dave Konopka (formerly of Lynx), and drummer John Stanier (formerly of Helmet). They recently played at Bonaroo.

I came across "The Yabba" a few days ago and I was blow away by the whole thing. The layering is intense and the audio and video really mesh well together. I could easily see myself playing this in a DJ set. -No Boats

Hammock members, Marc Byrd and Andrew Thompson originally intended not to release their original studio recordings or become a band. I for one - am thankful that it happened.

Ten Thousand Years Won't Save Your Life is a lush ambient track. The kind that makes a beautiful day even better.

As a recent transplant to Atlanta, I've been really eager to hear some local music. One night, I was out with my room mate and literally got finished saying that I couldn't wait to get my first Atlanta mixtape, when we were approached by someone on the street."Do you like hip hop? Don't worry, I'm not trying to sell you anything ... I just want to give you my mixtape." - he said. We took them and went our way. It was a CD in a cardboard sleeve ... very professionally done. I couldn't wait to hear it.

The first time I played Legend - Somewhere, I was floored by how good it was. I went to the website to find out more. I sent in a request to do an interview and received an email from Legend's manager - TeCori, the man that had actually gave me the CD. They agreed to do the interview and decided to meet up somewhere to do it. I picked a coffee shop thinking it would be quiet enough. Unfortunately, I was wrong, so what was supposed to be a video interview, turn into the transcript below:

Today, we are here at a coffee shop in Inman Park / East Atlanta talking to Legend. How's it going?

How's it going?

So we are here today because a few weeks back I was given your "mixtape" on the street, and it's been in my car repeatedly on playback. So I wanted to share that with our readers and get a short interview with you. Thanks for taking the time to come out tonight.

Now, you're originally from St. Louis, aren't you?

Yes

What brought you to Atlanta?

A change in life.

I feel you. I just recently moved here myself and I can tell that there's some real good hip-hop going on in Atlanta. It's a great place to get a career going. So you created the mixtape here, yes?

Yeah, I produced it here in my home studio in my apartment.

What part of Atlanta do you live?

DeKalb

Let's talk about the mixtape - "Somewhere", for a little bit. To me the quality and production on the whole thing was excellent, and I noticed that you had different producers for each track. How was that to work with different producers?

I got beats off sites like Soundclick and Youtube. There's only one song on there that's from a face to face interaction with a producer. But, shout out to all the producers on there. I appreciate it.

I got you. The flow is excellent as well. It starts off and then peaks at track 6 - "Somebody or Nobody", my favorite on the thing ... and it steadily comes down from there. On track 1, you are talking to someone on the phone and getting their advice about getting in this game. Their comments were to put your DNA on this, to put your mark on this - to make it your own thing. Can you tell us who this was?

An older dude I know named Marvin, who's like an uncle/mentor to me. He taught me a lot about hip-hop and its essence. We have a lot of conversations about music and just life in general. He's a funny guy and jokes a lot, but still intelligent at the same time, as you can tell from the intro.

I love the fact that he says - when you take something from hip-hop, you have to give it back ...

Of course.

I definitely believe that. Let's talk about some of the other tracks. I notice there are a lot of tracks that seem personal to you ... relationships, your family, your mother and trying to be successful for your kids. I definitely respect that. What's next for you ... are you going to get out there and do shows?

Yes, to do shows and keep putting music out there, the same way you got it. Really just touching the people.

Social media is a great way to do it too.

Yeah, definitely.

Getting out and doing shows if a valid way to do it. Now, the video for "Somebody or Nobody" - I love that you use the sample from American Gangster. Was that what inspired you to make the song?

Yeah, I think I was watching the movie one day and later on found that beat on YouTube. Things just kind of flowed from there.

There's a line in there, I can't remember the exact words ... but something like "from one cent, like Mr. Lincoln, I'm never changing." That one stuck with me. Is that your seminal track off this in terms of promotion?

I feel like it's the most attention grabbing out of all of the songs. It's like the peak of the tape, but I wouldn't necessarily say it's my favorite.

Well, what is your favorite track?

Probably "Play This For My Mama", if I had to pick one.

So, let me ask about that one. From what I gathered on the track, you weren't raised by your mother.

No.

And she's not in your life?

Not really.

Well, that's a nice dedication to her. Some of the other tracks talk about police brutality ... and that's topical because there's been a turning point of late in the eyes of white people and a lot are waking up. It speaks to me that you say in that track, I'm just trying to live my life - don't shoot me. Did you have a personal experience that inspired that?

Well, most of the people that grew up in the inner city and impoverished areas have experiences with police, and learn how to deal with cops. When I was making that song it just came real natural and I pretty much did it in one take.

Now, you're from St. Louis of course and Ferguson was right there.

I'm originally from Ferguson.

Oh, you are from Ferguson?

Yeah, yeah ... my family is still there.

Were you living there when the marches happened?

No, I was here already.

Well, that was definitely a turning point, with the Black Lives Matter group and other good things coming out of there today. Can you tell about the production?

I mixed and recorded everything myself. The beats were pretty much already mixed when I bought them, I just mixed all of the vocals and got them to mesh well together. It's all software based.

Well, you definitely fooled me, because it sounds studio quality. How have you utilized social media?

I haven't really utilized social media, in terms of myself speaking out. I let the music speak for itself. I like for people to hear it and know me for the music. Just use that to connect to people. But, I do understand the importance of social media and plan on utilizing it more.

I think that's a true sign of a great artist. Well, music is art and passion, and it's great when it can speak for you. Do you have any artists that have influenced you?

Kanye is a big influence. I really like Starlito ... Future. A lot of R & B, new and old.

I noticed you don't use the vocal effects all over. You use them, but sparingly.

Yeah, I had an engineer who told me to leave my vocals as natural as possible, to give the listener more of a raw feel and experience. But I'm not against vocal manipulation. Sometimes, it can bring a different feel to a song that's necessary.

Now, I'm showing my age here … I don't know how old you are, but in terms of production, it reminds me of the album "The Main Ingredient" by Pete Rock and CL Smooth. Are you familiar with those guys?

No, but I know the name. I'm only 23.

Yeah, this was early 90's. Anything else, you would like to say?

I'm really appreciative and thankful for you listening to the music and taking the time out to interview me. I just want everybody out there to check out the music and let me know what they think through social media and when they see me.
