  Throw a fundraiser and ask the community for help! Shortly after midnight on January 1, 2011, I had a seizure which led to the discovery of a lesion on my left parietal lobe. Unfortunately, I was unable to will it away with optimism and simply ignoring its presence. I went for another MRI in October to find that it had doubled in size and showed signs of internal bleeding. Due to multiple factors, the doctors at the University of Chicago Medical Center have opted for surgical removal. However, given that I do not have health insurance, I have to convince the hospital I can pay for services. So, I humbly ask you good folk to please make a donation to help evict the squatter that has taken residence in my brain! -Rachel There are several options available if you wish to donate: 1. Eat, drink and be merry with me Saturday, November 19th from 6-9p at Centro located at 3819 N. Ashland Avenue in Chicago A $40 bracelet purchased at the venue will get you OPEN BAR and an ALL YOU CAN EAT BUFFET. There will be raffles for art, a massage session, photography services, and more. This is my girl Robbi representing Chi-town. You are gonna like what you hear. Here's her bio -

The petite East-Indian musician began writing songs as early as eight years old. Robbi's first performance was in a Mosque at the age of fifteen, when she recited an Islamic themed rap song. Her popularity in the asian-american community grew after winning the international YellowFist Asian writing competition (with over 10,000 entries) and being featured on the cover of Ivy League university magazine A.A RockZine!. Winning numerous rap battle competitions sponsored by educational organizations such as the Anti-Truth campaign, and ending each of her solo concerts by "freestyling" with the audience, Robbi gained tremendous respect from the underground hip-hop scene. Apart from exclusive concerts or battle competitions, Robbi has also performed for fashion show events such as Hollywood's Celebrity Fashion Designer Danielle Kelly (www.dk75raw.com). One of her most memorable performances was held with global hip-hop luminary KRS-One, who commended Robbi on her vision.

Robbi's songs have been featured on many of the world's top urban radio stations such as Chicago's WGCI 107.5 FM, along with much support from top college radio stations such as WHPK 88.3 FM and WNUR 89.3 FM. She has also starred in the documentary film"That Asian Thing" (www.thatasianthing.net) along with a soundtrack single for "Leg Before Wicket" (www.legbeforewicket.org), set to be screened across international film festivals. Aside from movies, Robbi is also familiar with the television world, as she has been appeared on the VH-1 Show "Miss Rap Supreme" in early April of 2007. No Boats' Projects - DJ Competition and Artist Collective

Other than this blog, I'm involved in several other endeavors. One of those is an ongoing DJ / MC / Beatbox / Live PA Competition (www.whenskillsturndeadly.com) at Gramaphone Records. We had our first contest in September and October and are about to start the second this Saturday November 12. I wrote an article for Brilliant Mad Magazine covering the first event. Brilliantly Mad is also a partner with Solarium Deluna. This is an artist collective that we are about to open in Humboldt Park. We being myself, Taylor Entwistle and Simon Jay. The goal for the collective is to provide a safe, comfortable, and affordable space for healers, artists, musicians and DJ's to throw positive events which will benefit the community and the city. We are about to throw our second fundraiser which will go towards the first month's rent. This fundraiser is actually two nights at a space graciously donated by our friend Jonathon Hirsh (http://www.facebook.com/TheLivingRoomGallery).

The events are are on Nov. 12 and 18 from 7 pm - midnite

The Revolution Will Have a Beat - Libyan hiphop

I really need to learn Arabic. My dad explains that he is basically describing the atrocities Ghaddafi committed against Libya and celebrating our country's freedom. To a sick beat. There's tonnes more out there, I'm trawling through it now.



Here's a basic translation I just mocked up:

Respect to the Libyan revolutionary heroes
This is in memory of those who died for the cause

We’ve been liberated from the aggressor, the oppressor
Our country has come back and it’s free,
Thanks to Allah, the most giving, now we have the taste of freedom

First, I want to congratulate the Libyan people for their victory from the oppressor
From God, the Greatest, this victory came

With the Libyan people’s patience, we got rid of him and his family
Liberating Tripoli was a hysterical night
That will stay forever in Libya’s memory
After we liberated you (Tripoli), you’ll forever be the capital of the people

Before we couldn’t breathe, but now we breathe the fresh sea breeze

But the people said we are not a nation divided by tribes

We have to achieve solidarity to take our country through this mess
