What can I say about The Brian Jonestown Massacre? They just might be one of the greatest unknown bands of all time. That may be because of lead singer Anton Newcombe's tumultuous relationship with the band, the music industry, drugs and his own demons. Despite the problems, they have managed to release quite a repertoire of albums (mostly self released) and are the subject of the incredible documentary Dig! If I've managed just one more convert, then I've done my job.

What's The Story Morning Glory?

"How many special people change? How many lives are living strange? Where were you while we were getting high?

Well?!?!?! Where were you nigga? LOL ... Man, I posted about the Stone Roses a little while back and they were tops at what they did, but there's no doubt that Oasis came and picked up their momentum when they were dealing with manager and record company bullshit and Oasis ran with it. I don't necessarily want to compare the two bands, even though Liam Gallagher cites the Roses as a big influence - but Oasis really had something going when they dropped (What's The Story) Morning Glory ?.

Listening to it again on this Saturday morning, especially Hey Now! and Champagne Supernova, really make me feel nostalgic - and thats a great thing for music. It means that there was a time and a place that was special that's tied into your brain by the music you hear.

MANDATORY :: Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures (1979) Full Album

In 1979, Joy Division changed the musical landscape with their debut album - Unknown Pleasures on Factory Records. The music was dark and gloomy, which resonates with their audience even to this day. Originally named Warsaw, the band primarily consisted of Ian Curtis (vocals and occasional guitar), Bernard Sumner (guitar and keyboards), Peter Hook (bass guitar and backing vocals) and Stephen Morris (drums and percussion). They worked with Martin Hannett to produce Unknown Pleasures.

The band initially disliked the "spacious, atmospheric sound" of the album, which did not reflect their more aggressive live sound. Hook said in 2006, "It definitely didn't turn out sounding the way I wanted it ... But now I can see that Martin did a good job on it ... There's no two ways about it, Martin Hannett created the Joy Division sound." Hook also noted that he was able to hear Curtis's lyrics and Sumner's guitar parts for the first time on the record, because during gigs the band played too loudly.

The album's cover, which I used to think was a picture of a mountain range or some sort of "Joy Division" is actually a reverse print image of radio waves from pulsar CP 1919, from The Cambridge Encyclopedia of Astronomy. It may be one of the most iconic images in rock history.

In 1980, a troubled Ian Curtis would take his own life in his home in Manchester. The remaining members went on to form New Order, achieving critical success.

TAKE ME AWAY :: Tycho - Dive (Full Album)

Ghostly International wunderkind Scott Hansen a.k.a. Tycho, has been has been making ambient music since 2004. He didn't really come to prominence until 2008 though when his music was played on Cartoon Networks Toonami block and later Adult Swim. His music might often be mistaken for Boards of Canada, as the sounds are so similar.

The Cure - Staring At The Sea - The Singles (Full Album)

One of the seminal bands, during my formative years, was definitely The Cure. Staring At The Sea - The Singles has all the "latest wave that you've been craving for". These guys influenced the electronic, goth, industrial and indie scenes that followed them. I have to thank my older sister for introducing me to them through this CD. Personally, seeing them live in 1989 in Atlanta, changed my life.

The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots (Full Album - Vinyl Rip)

One of the few things my ex-wife left me with was this album. It sat in a box for a few years until one day I pulled it out curious to see if she had any real taste in music. My my my ... how I was surprised. I knew that The Flaming Lips were good, but I didn't imagine that this album would be on heavy rotation on my CD player. In The Morning of the Magicians has got to be one of my favorite Flaming Lips songs of all time.

The award winning album was eventually made into a Broadway play directed by Des McAnuff in 2007. Frontman Wayne Coyne said of the plot -

"There's the real world and then there's this fantastical world. This girl, the Yoshimi character, is dying of cancer. And these two guys are battling to come visit her in the hospital. And as one of the boyfriends envisions trying to save the girl, he enters this other dimension where Yoshimi is this Japanese warrior and the pink robots are an incarnation of her disease. It's almost like the disease has to win in order for her soul to survive. Or something like that."

World Party - Goodbye Jumbo (Full Album - playlist)

World Party

Karl Wallinger's band - World Party might be one of the greatest bands that you've never heard of from the 80's and 90's. Wallinger got his start as the musical director of London's West End version on The Rocky Horror Picture Show, before joining a funk band dubbed The Out and then The Waterboys.

Recorded at Wallinger's home in 1986, his debut album Private Revolution yielded two minor hits in the UK, "Private Revolution" and "Ship of Fools". "Ship Of Fools", however, did much better outside the UK — it reached no. 4 in Australia, no. 21 in New Zealand, and no. 27 in the US, in the process becoming the act's only major international hit.

Between World Party's first and second albums, Wallinger aided Sinéad O'Connor in recording her 1988 debut, The Lion and the Cobra. O'Connor, then an unknown, had appeared as a guest on World Party's first album. She would go on to appear as a guest on the second LP as well.

Goodbye Jumbo, World Party's second album, contained the minor UK hit singles "Way Down Now" and "Put the Message in the Box". Wallinger collaborated with fellow songwriter Guy Chambers on some of the tracks. Goodbye Jumbo was voted "album of the year" by Q magazine and was nominated for a Grammy Award for "best alternative music performance" in the US.

These guys are an incredible live show too. I have the chance to see them at the Rock Am Ring Festival in 1993 in Nurburgring Germany along with Faith No More, INXS, Leonard Cohen, Danzig, The Black Crowes and a ton of other acts.

Fugees - Blunted On Reality (FULL Album)

Back in the 90's, there were a few hip hop groups that stood out before their time. The Fugees busted onto in 1994 with Blunted On Reality. With Pras, Lauren Hill (who was then 18) and Wyclef Jean - they made this album their own way, perfecting a style that would lead them to re-create on The Score - which became one of the best selling hip hop albums of all time.

Bonobo - North Borders [Full Album]

The bonobo, Pan paniscus, formerly called the pygmy chimpanzee and less often, the dwarf or gracile chimpanzee, is a great ape and one of the two species making up the genus Pan; the other is Pan troglodytes, or the common chimpanzee.

Simon Green, also known by his stage name Bonobo, is a British musician, producer and DJ. Green has recorded and performed solo DJ sets under the name Barakas, and together with Robert Luis from Tru Thoughts as Nairobi and Barakas.

North Borders is Bonobo's 6th LP. Released on Ninja Tune records 3 days ago on March 21, the LP includes collaborations with Eryka Badu, Szjerdene, Grey Reverend and Cornelia. It was due for release on 1st April 2013, but was released early in digital format after a promotional copy was leaked.

Bonobo uses a wide variety of samples in his music combined with heavy, often complex basslines. His music generally develops linearly - with new elements such as basslines or percussion coming in one after the other. In Days to Come, he mixes this sonic background with the clean yet distinctive vocals of Bajka, who often uses harmony to build up a multifaceted sound.
Whilst often touring solo, and performing DJ sets, in 2004 Bonobo opted to follow the growing trend amongst electronic acts of playing with a full band. The band plays live renditions of studio material, with a singer, keyboardist, guitarist, saxophonist, string section, electronics, and drummer. Simon Green mainly plays bass guitar, and leads the band from the middle.

REGGAE CLASSIC :: Toots and the Maytals - 54-46 That's My Number

The originators of Reggae music - in fact the first to use the word reggae (spelled "reggay") in the title of a song - Do The Reggay ... Toots and the Maytals have been performing for 40+ years.

Frederick “Toots” Hibbert, the frontman of the group, was born in May Pen, Clarendon, Jamaica in 1945, the youngest of seven children. He grew up singing gospel music in a church choir, and moved to Kingston in 1958 at the age of thirteen. In 1961, Hibbert met Henry "Raleigh" Gordon and Nathaniel "Jerry" Mathias, forming a group whose early recordings were incorrectly attributed to "The Flames" and "The Vikings" in the UK by Island Records. The Maytals first had chart success recording for producer Clement "Coxsone" Dodd at Studio One. With musical backing from Dodd's house band, The Skatalites, the Maytals' close-harmony gospel singing ensured success, overshadowing Dodd's other up-and-coming vocal group, The Wailers. After staying at Studio One for about two years, the group moved on to do sessions for Prince Buster before recording with Byron Lee in 1966.

With Lee, the Maytals won the first-ever Jamaican Independence Festival Popular Song Competition with their original song "Bam Bam" (later covered in a Dancehall style by Sister Nancy, and also by Yellowman in 1982). However, the group's musical career was interrupted in late 1966 when Hibbert was arrested and imprisoned for 18 months. He stated that he was not arrested for ganja, but while bailing a friend. He also stated that he made up the number 54-46 when writing 54-46 That's My Number about his time in jail.

In the 1920's, a guitar player walked down to the crossroads at midnite. There he met the Devil who tuned his guitar so that to give him mastery of the instrument.

This is the core of a legend attributed to Robert Johnson, a blues musician from Mississippi. Little is actually know about him. His records were played on stage at a concert in Carnegie Hall. He was thought to be dead at that time, but there are conflicting stories. One story claimed that he was killed by a jealous husband who had given a bottle of whiskey containing poison. There are so many variations and legends of this guy, there are books and active researchers still trying to find out who he was, perhaps we will never know.

Wikipedia provides a ton of details on the knowns and unknowns of this man. There is a complete Radiolab Podcast covering the legend of Robert Johnson as well.

Whoever this guy was, his influence on popular music is immeasurable.

Considered by some to be the greatest Trance / Progressive album of all time, Sasha's Airdrawndagger raised the bar in the EDM world in 2002 and greatly influenced a minimal sound which was becoming very popular during that time. This album builds and builds and builds. "Cloud Cuckoo" and "Bloodlock" might be my favorites here, but each track can stand on it's on merit. Along with original tracks created by Sasha, it featured appearances by Charlie May, Junkie XL and James Holden. The final track - Wavy Gravy reached #64 in the UK Singles Chart and was the basis of a remix contest held by Sasha.

Back in the early 90's, after I had graduated high school ... I came across this album in a used music store. The sound that would eventually be termed shoegaze was nowhere more polished than on this album. I would play this on repeat and listen to it in the morning, during the day and at night while going to sleep. These sounds got me through some very tough times being in another country at the time ... away from everyone that I cared about. Just listen to "Polar Bear" and tell me that you don't get shivers.

This was Ride's debult album released in 1990, then reissued in 2001, 2010 and 2011. Nowhere was named one of the best albums of the shoegaze genre and was listed in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die

Ride ceased to be a band in 1996.
