Owls by Drachenhaus is a spooky and hauntingly beautiful ode to the Twin Peaks inspired idea that the Owl is a spiritual entity ... with one foot in reality and the other in the spirit world.

Drachenhaus are James Vader and Angie Pfeffer, a Post-Industrial two-piece residing in Berlin. Both share duties on analogue synths, both bash away at drum machines, both whisper and moan their vocals. However Angie is known to dance and James is prone to fondling a guitar. When playing live, they like to add improvised sections to their songs, extending them, jamming and responding to the acoustic feedback from each other and the radiance of the audience. Their music could be described as Depeche Mode collaborating with Goblin to produce a soundtrack for the next John Carpenter movie.

MANDATORY :: Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures (1979) Full Album

In 1979, Joy Division changed the musical landscape with their debut album - Unknown Pleasures on Factory Records. The music was dark and gloomy, which resonates with their audience even to this day. Originally named Warsaw, the band primarily consisted of Ian Curtis (vocals and occasional guitar), Bernard Sumner (guitar and keyboards), Peter Hook (bass guitar and backing vocals) and Stephen Morris (drums and percussion). They worked with Martin Hannett to produce Unknown Pleasures.

The band initially disliked the "spacious, atmospheric sound" of the album, which did not reflect their more aggressive live sound. Hook said in 2006, "It definitely didn't turn out sounding the way I wanted it ... But now I can see that Martin did a good job on it ... There's no two ways about it, Martin Hannett created the Joy Division sound." Hook also noted that he was able to hear Curtis's lyrics and Sumner's guitar parts for the first time on the record, because during gigs the band played too loudly.

The album's cover, which I used to think was a picture of a mountain range or some sort of "Joy Division" is actually a reverse print image of radio waves from pulsar CP 1919, from The Cambridge Encyclopedia of Astronomy. It may be one of the most iconic images in rock history.

In 1980, a troubled Ian Curtis would take his own life in his home in Manchester. The remaining members went on to form New Order, achieving critical success.

GLASS CANDY - "THE POSSESSED" from After Dark 2 upcoming EP (download)

Glass Candy is sort of a side project of Johnny Jewel, his most famous band being - The Chromatics. While the band's early work blends elements of No Wave and glam rock, their later work incorporates Italo disco.

They are known for evolving through the years since their original collaboration, and experimenting with various musical genres. They have released a number of albums since the early 2000s, their most recent being the compilation album Deep Gems (2008). The Possessed is from their upcoming EP - After Dark 2.

This is one of the most formative albums of my teenage years. My life and the album, was filled with angst, love, memories and desire. I'll never forget driving to Atlanta with my dad, sister and friends to see The Cure play live. Some of my favorites on this album are Pictures of You, Fascination Street, Prayers for Rain, The Same Deep Water as You, and Disintegration. Enjoy!

NEW JOKERS OF THE SCENE / Blank Capsule

There's nothing better than waking up to find a new Jokers of the Scene remix or original has been released. Today it was both. First the remix - Toronto's Sandro Perri teamed up with JOTS to remix Futureactive Kid Part 1 from his album Impossible Spaces. Here's what JOTS Linus Booth had to say in a Now Toronto interview-

How did you end up hooking up with Sandro to do this remix?

I've known Sandro for probably about 10 years now, stemming from an initial bonding over our mutual love of Arthur Russell and Basic Channel records. Even though our musical careers have followed two different paths it was great to get reacquainted with both him and his music after moving to Toronto. Then we found out that he had some remixes in the works already from other mutual friends so we basically asked for the chance to remix something ourselves and he graciously gave us the parts.

Did you take a different approach to this than you would when remixing a dance song?

Very much so. We knew making a dance remix made no sense with his work and as we've been experimenting more and broadening our own sound palette, his song provided the perfect opportunity for us to work on something slower and moodier while still maintaing his perfect pop song.
