DOG DAY :: N'to - The Hound

N'to - The Hound
N'to - The Hound
It should be no secret that N'to is one of my favorite producers today. His music can only be described as minimal house / tech / whatever with a hint of French Touch. At least that is the feeling I get when I hear it.

The Hound is a dark and stormy night ... but that dog has the scent. He's closing in, as you run into the void trying to evade him. It's inevitable, you can't escape from the Hound.

20 Years of Ravin'

20 Years of Ravin' Barrel dEM
20 Years of Ravin'

When I was young, I listened to a lot of electronic based music - New Order, Depeche Mode, etc. But it wasn't until the early 90's and in particular 1993 that I got into DJ led dance and rave music. You see, I was stationed in Germany in the military at the time and the rave clubs and parties over there were burgeoning. I got an earful of that repetitive, driving sound and the vibe from all the other participants and I couldn't stop. I wanted to share a few of the anthems that I still listen to after all these years - the ones that were formative in my music education, whether they be techno, house, trance, breakbeat, drum 'n bass, dubstep, trap or downtempo, from that time until the present day.

And back to where it began-

BT - 13 Angels On My Broken Windowsill

BT 13 Angels On My Broken Windowsill Barrel dEM

BT a.k.a. Brian Transeau has created 13+ minute epic track with 13 Angels On My Broken Windowsill. This one starts off very softly and ambient, then drops into a glitchy, dubstep sort of realm. The accompanying video is a sight to behold - simply gorgeous.

Brian started his career in the early 90's collaborating with Deep Dish. He soon became a pioneering artist in the trance genre movement and does not consider himself to be a DJ, rather a classical artist. In June of 2012, he released If the Stars are Eternal So are You and I which is one of the first albums where he incorporates ambient, glitchy and more minimal sounds. It's from this album, that we have 13 Angels On My Broken Windowsill.

Jon Hopkins is a technical genius! After a rough start at the Boiler Room with some faulty equipment, he shows what he is really capable of - which is bringing mad beautiful, glitchy beats to the masses.

Sasha received a Grammy nomination for his remix of Felix da Housecat's "Watching Cars Go By", which was featured on Involver.

NOTHING FAKE :: Nathan Fake - Nekatona

Like a locomotive steaming down the track ... Nekatona pushes forward with rhythm. The track is typical of what we've come to expect from Nathan and the Border Community label, which is not to say that its bad. Nathan Fake has defined a new style of minimal techno over the years, which I've really come to love.

IT'S A JAMES HOLDEN DAY :: James Holden SONAR (Sao Paulo) 12-05-2012

Sometimes you just want to unwind. Today, I sat through the first day at a new job. Lots of training videos on harrassment. You know the drill. I also had a killer headache the entire time. Then I finally get home and the power was off. I just wanted to relax and listen to some music. When the power finally did come back on I went on the search for a new James Holden mix. This guy always puts me in the right frame of mind.

LOVESTEP :: Birdy - People Help The People (TIP's Sunken Hearts rework)

Seems like minimal soul / R & B is making waves these days. First, you have James Blake then Frank Ocean and now this ... the original song is pretty good, but DJ and Londoner TIP or Two Inch Punch has really amped up the soul on this Sunken Heart remix. Light the incense, slip into a bubble bath with a glass of red and crank this one up on repeat. Your soul will thank you!

BONUS: Jessie Ware - If You're Never Gonna Move. [T.I.P RMX]

TWITTER ARTIST SPOTLIGHT :: Loversrock - Good time (original mix) / Amselcom

I got a tweet to check out this tune on a Soundcloud page belonging to Amselcom. So I followed it. What is Amselcom anyway? A record label, an artist collective? Like most of the stuff I receive, there wasn't much information ... but it appears that Amselcom is an online museum of mobile artists curated by Andrew Calder from Berlin. They also promote some good music and it looks as though they are attempting to start a record label.

The song above is by Loversrock and was created in 2005, but never released. Loversrock have also released tracks on the Moodmusic record label also from Berlin.

Clearly, these guys have an ear for music and an eye for art ... so we'll keep them on our radar. Be sure to check out all the appropriate links and follow them on twitter.
